i'm finishing my intern year in internal medicine. applying for cardiology fellowship this year. I think endgame makes a good point. I got my z at the beginning of intern year and even with it being a fairly affordable sports car, its still a big chunk of each month's salary. Having a nice car is great, but being able to live in a nice place and eat what I want to eat, go where I want to go when I want to go is nicer.
Traveling, having nice clothes, having furniture, etc. all around is a more pleasant life than having a kickass car and sitting at home staring at it.

Great performance for the price. In 2009 when it had 55,000 miles on it, it was showing it's age and was time for a new car. I was considering a used Gallardo, used 911 turbo or ZR1 in the low 100k range. I did the math though and it adds up like this: $2,000 a month payment + high insurance with roughly $1,500 a month going to interest payment. Then you get almost $1,000 a month in depreciation. Your total cost of ownership is between $2,500 and $3,000 a month once you go to resell your car. It's also expected that you drive cars like that for 3,000 miles a year to keep the depreciation and insurance down. Being fresh out of residency, I had lots of items on my wish list, like a house, new furniture, electronics, travel, dates with future trophy wife, etc. Then you get used to spending $1,500 on bottle service in vegas and trips to Honolulu on less than 7 days notice. The money goes fast.
After long deliberation, I got a 370z because it made sense: not too expensive, not many other people have them, looks great, handles great, nice interior. After suspension, tires and bolt on induction upgrades the 370z is a fantastic and fun car. It just needs a little more power. I knew when I bought it that forced induction would be coming. We are so close to forced induction now that it is the perfect time to own a 370z!
So the trade off is: do you want to live in a shack and have a GT3 in the garage, or live in a pimp house on the golf course and drive a turbo 370z?
.

Spear, Audi R8 is my pick. The car looks absolutely Stunning! Everytime I saw one, I drooled all over. It's just the full package IMO. You can take it to the track and drive sunday on a 5 hour roadtrip on highway. I am not sure if I will have a car fund of $140,000 but if I did, I would buy the Audi R8 in a heartbeat. Those LED headlights = EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Yeah AK,

It's one sexy beast. I've loved the R8 since the day I first saw it.

ROFL @ this guy, pretty sure we were talking about a GT3 RS which would be a more comparable vehicle since they're both N/A and in closer price comparison. Thanks for the input on the Porsche Carrera GT since that's even CLOSE..fail. Also I put in that same sentence that you made bold lettering that I really like Porsche so I don't know why you would come at the post as if I said otherwise by trying to prove how good some Porsches are.

Carrera GT? No problem

The New 911 Turbo is quicker in a straight line and probably around track but there hasn't been enough test to actually prove anything yet.

Regardless, the Audi R8 isn't faster than any Porsche.

The Nissan GT-R? It recently lost to the new Porsche 911 Turbo in a Road & Track comparison. Not because of it's "numbers" but because it's a far better "drivers car". And yes, they took price into account.

Track numbers don't tell the full story.

such an amazing car. It's not all about speed and 1/4 mile. It's about the look, the performance, the wow factor - the whole package! I think Audi R8 offers that

I know the first few years out of residency can be a little tough because of the piling debt. But if you have the oppurtunity (as a Urologist, you def do ) to get this car, please do. Remember you'll only live once and you actually want to enjoy it in your prime NOT when you're 55 years old.

amen to this man. Congrats on the residency. I know you want the High dollar sports car and I definately believe you deserve every bit of it with your schooling. But you are a smart man ( hence the Doctor) just relax and see what the first year is like in your new profession and hulk up the Z. It will be twice as nice knowing your smoking those High coin cars and the expression they will give you will be worth 100 GT3's. Then when the dust settles go out and splurge. (then sell your Z to me for like $10k that would be greeaaaattt!)

How about actually driving an Audi R8 and Porsche GT3 and then go from there? You can look at spec sheets, lap times, 0-60 times, etc all day / night until you're blue in the face, what’s it accomplish? Does your livelihood depend upon you winning races or are you looking for something you truly love to drive? The later can’t be answered by just looking at the spec sheet. If your idea of fun is basically just beating expensive cars get a used EVO (preferably a 9), delete the wing, big turbo/ tune, supporting modifications. Now you have a true sleeper. It all comes down to what you want but to make an informed decision you’d need to take some test drives.

I went out lapping earlier this week with my boss and his 2010 GT3 RS at our local track.
Calabogie Motorsports Park

He was lapping 15 seconds on average faster per lap than I was!! Even if I ran with a big power adder and slicks it would be tough to gain that much time. I'd almost have to strip my car down and turn it into a track car only as opposed to a daily driver.
