I guy tryed to twin charge a Evo but never really got it right. Blew 2 motors but did dyno once 500whp at I think it was 4k rpms . Then gave up on the project:shakes head:

Isnt that a Toyota Celica GTS motor??? I Could sware it is! I knew they had one in one of the lotus cars. Sounds like pure beautifulness to my ears! To bad you could not get that sound outa the z. Too big of displacement to sound soo elegant twin charged or not.

Usually its either the GTS motor (made by yamaha) or a honda k20a.

kdoske 02-15-2010 10:48 PM

I think it is the Toyota motor, could be wrong though.

DAMN! I wonder how fast he is going, to me it seems pretty damn fast. and with a car that small doesn't it need a roll cage?

Brazilbro 02-15-2010 11:34 PM

Its a 1.8L toyota with a yamaha designed head . the motor sucks, and Is the main reason I would never get a lotus. The K20 swaps are nice but it runs close to 20k for the swap. This one seems nice though.. twin charging is what the lotus has been missing!

Looks like GMR, backside of Mt.Baldy, I've been on that road several times, last time I was there, I did the whole 22 miles and only passed one car, it was awesome. The front side is only 13 miles, so most people avoid the long way.

Twin charging the 370 would be a very interesting and costly venture. There are two ways of doing this. The first way is compound charging as the Lotus pictured is set up. This would be feeding the turbochargers into the supercharger. This would results in very high boost pressures. Remember 10psi from the turbo system plus 4psi from the supercharger does not equal just 14psi. In a compound charged system the supercharger would be further compressing the 10psi from the turbo system. Hence the compound charging name.

The other option for this system would be to use a bypass valve to allow the system to use the supercharger for the instant response in the lower RPM's but then switching over to the turbocharger system in the higher RPM after full spool up has occurred. Finding a valve that would work well for this, and flow enough air for the Z's engine would be difficult. In regards to this working with the GTM kit it would be tough with the Rotrex charger, or even the Vortech found on the Stillen kit. This would work far better with a charger that has the magnetic clutch in the pulley (think AC compressor) like some of the Mercedes, AW11 MR2, and the Ogura clutch units.

It does look like the GTM SC and Turbo could co-exist on the same engine, but i think the only way this would happen would be to take the compound charging route. In other words time to lower the compression. I would love to see it, but someone would need some deep pockets to pull this off.

For my money i think i would go with a twin turbo kit, and use a small nitrous shot to spool it (assuming it needed the help spooling). Usually once the turbo's are spooled they aren't going to drop out of boost until you shut down the throttle.

ronin is the crazy old man who owns that lotus. you can learn more on the forums here...

I was actualy wondering about this the other week, if anyone was going to attempt it. ZZP did a twin charge kit on a 2005 Cobalt SS Supercharged. It made 465hp on stock internals which is amazing and had no lag at all. There kit was going for $7000...although that was on a cobalt, not a 370z..lol

STis have been twin charged as well.

LiquidZ 02-16-2010 10:11 PM

... and GT500's.

I beg to differ on the "1.8 sucks" comment. I had a gts I loved that car and that engine... and yes it is essentially the same engine as the one in the GT-S Celica's however they are usually bored out a little bit to 1.9 I believe.

fstrnldr 02-17-2010 09:52 PM

i don't know about the engine internals varying from the Celica version. The Lotus does however have its own engine management, and what is most likely a more aggressive tune than what Toyota put in the Celica.
