Any boosted High hp high mileage vqs out there?
Am looking at building the z 800whp+ and was wondering how the vq platform is holding up. I know a few guys hit the 1000hp milestones, butt how do these cars perform off the dyno. Other than a dyno graph, Can these cars be driven? 1/4 times? drivability? Reliability? or would a swap would be a more reliable option?

Only one guy I know of that has a high HP car that drag races. He broke his input shaft on the manual transmission the first time at the track at 26psi. 800+hp being reliable is very difficult at the moment. I am building for right at 800hp and will keep it turned down until things are figured out. One of the higher HP cars didn't make it long before the motor let go. Not sure why, he hasn't posted anything in a while. The other car has been rebuilt a couple of times. Not sure how his car is doing either. SOHO did a big build a while back for a drag car and I haven't seen anything on that car either. I think the guy is scared to death of it. There is no magic formula at the moment to keep them reliable. I have enough fuel and turbo's to be up in the 900hp range. I have just chosen to keep the boost down and I hope to stay reliable. We shall see. My build is just about finished.

Seb at Specialty Z is another one I just about forgot. He is at 900hp or so. I am not sure how many miles he has on it. He had to do a few things to keep the headgaskets sealed up to his liking.

The one guy that broke his input shaft was going to use his. He is saving up to upgrade the tranny to a Hollinger Sequential. I messaged with him the other day and he had a life event. He was pushed off the road by an 18 wheeler into on coming traffic. He hit an 18 wheeler on that side of the interstate. The 18 wheeler that pushed him off the road took off. So, he is out for a while due to injuries. He was in a daily driver. This is the only car I know that was being used as intended. He is not on the forum much. MA-motorsports did his build quietly. Some days I wish I would have done the same, Quietly.... |

This is great topic. I had a GMC syclone and ran high boost, made to 80,000 miles till I broke a a piston. I always ran good fuel (before e85). Id like to believe a 14lb z on e85 could live a long life (I'm hoping) any information on this subject would be appreciated.

OP,
I take it you haven't driven this platform in High HP fashion. I have about 15k miles in different setups all at 1000bhp+. I can tell you definitively you will not want to daily the vehicle at this power level. I have found that the chassis is more compliant at around 700whp. Anything above this and it starts to become a handful to drive. You can get a lot of miles out of a 700whp setup. A good solid motor build will get you up to 700-800whp+. You will want a closed deck block with anything over 20psi. Most if not 90+% of the guys running big power are on a closed deck block. I would set your glory numbers and then drop down to something a little more compliant. with a TT set up you can always turn up the boost.

How did you do your new engine build. Wondering what you did this time since you have been leading the charge for a while. |

Very curious about this as well. Ideally I would like to be able to turn the boost down track it, take small road trips, turn it up, possibly do some roll race events ect. I understand with any build things aren't going to be perfect and there are so many variables, but compared to other engines, how would you rate the vq37 build/cost to reliability/potential ratio compared to other engines 2J, LS ?

The motor has already seen 46psi of boost yesterday during some road testing. Needless to say the car is extremely violent at that boost level!

So are you street tuning a 46 psi car?

No we are doing custom maps with ecutek a truly flex map. Depending on flex content boost will scale. We turned it down after a few pulls. It’s way too violent on the street and was a handful to say the least. We confirmed it worked and turned it back down. We are trying some stuff that hasn’t been done on the Z platform before.

Additionally we already had rented a dyno a few weeks ago and spent an entire day getting everything settled. Right now we are working on the extras. Once that’s done we will go for final numbers... at 46psi conservatively we are at 1300whp based on our already dyno numbers
