What did you do?
I was an Aircraft Electrician 423x0 and worked mostly on A-1 Skyraiders and some A-26 Invaders
Got my hands dirty and my knuckles scraped on more than a few occasions.
Here's a pic of an A-1H aptly named 'Magnet ***' because of it's propensity for attracting ground fire (and resulting bullet holes) during close support missions.
Another pic of an A-26A (On-Mark Engineering B-26K conversion).
Lastly - that's me - young and handsome on Christmas Eve 1969 sitting on the rooftop veranda of the Hotel Ubar when I was TDY to Udorn Thailand.
Before Embassy duty I was Powerplants/Flightline on OV-10 Broncos. What made me hate being an aircraft mech more than anything was cutting my arma and hands on bullet and shrap holes from the Vietnam war.....And I started working on the bastards in 86 and they were still there.

We had the OV-10's at NKP as well, O-2's, C-123's, CH/HH3's Jollies, HH53 Super Jollies, AC-119K, C-47's, and a bunch of Transit Alert aircraft just passing thru.
Getting cut up on airplanes was more or less a given.
We were supposed to wear fatigue trousers with buttons instead of zippers so as not to snag or short out electrical equip.
I developed some mid range hearing loss from working on the flightline.

They came out with this near the end of my build... no room left in the engine bay anyway.
Saw it in person - nicely crafted.

Appreciate your Thanks - and, back atch'a

I understand.
We had a Communications Compound set near the middle of the base.
Top Secret - monitoring Communist forces radio traffic from VN, Laos, Cambodia
We were only 60 miles away from Hanoi - and 10 - 12 miles from the Ho Chi Minh Trail coming down out of the mountains in Laos.
We also saw a lot of covert activity (Air America) cycling in and out of our base.
To this day there are those who still don't want to talk about it...and up until fairly recently - myself included.
You hear Nothing - You see Nothing - You know Nothing were the orders of the day.
And unless you were there you really wouldn't understand much anyway.

When I was in the DoD. I bounced around Eastern Europe, mostly Yugoslavia in the late 70's working on a few programs. There were things going on at the time with the cold war that people still don't know about and never will. Looking back on it. It felt I was in a spy movie comedy. Spy vs Spy. It did cause me to have a nice hole in my back with a little entrance wound.

My old boss may have been there in the middle of the base. He told me one thing. He said, "If the base was ever overran the MP's had one order. To shoot him." I guess it is better than being captured and tortured to death by the enemy. Not cool....

Been there. My second post was Prague , Czechoslovakia. I was there for the Velvet revolution. Our special buddies included the KGB and GRU. They played some super ridiculous games including microwaving the hell out of us at night just to help us remember we weren't home.
