Hi,

Wanted to reach out and ask if anyone ran into the issue with their Z shutting off due to lack of fuel (although gauge says otherwise). After installing the Stillen supercharger I was at the track and had over a 1/4 tank of gas. On the straight.. car shut off in WOT. I filled her back up and it didn't happen again that day. Just this past weekend, I had trouble starting the Z... gas was below 1/2 tank.

I know CZP has a return correction kit... but I am still return-less. I followed the Stillen instructions for the pump assembly modifications.

"The factory in-tank regulator relieves into internal passages that lead to a pair of venturis. When removing the in-tank regulator, you will require this product in order to continue feeding your return fuel into these venturis. One of these venturis creates a swirl function which reduces aeration and promotes canister refilling. The other venturi is a jet-pump used to draw fuel over the center of your saddle-type gas tank (over the driveshaft). Without this product in your fuel system build, your vehicle will run out of fuel while the gauge is somewhere just below half tank."

Just as a sanity check - are you sure this isn't the standard fuel starve issue? i.e. - did the shutoff happen shortly after a hard right turn?

No, was a straight shot. I am aware of the hard turn situation, but this was not the case.

I'm also just using the standard Walbro 255 pump. Tuning went well. Was a conservative 350wHP (07 Nismo HR)

Pull your pump and check the hose going from the pump to the basket, it's a quick 10 minute job, I've seen these crack in the middle, and when fuel goes below that mark it sucks air.

Was the last turn before the straight a right? I have only fuel starved once.. but it happened a good ways down the road going straight after the hard right turn that pushed all the fuel to the drivers side of the tank.

If the last turn going into the straight was a right turn, I strongly suspect it was just a fuel starve.

If you’re on a road course track with only just over 1/4 tank you are definitely getting fuel slosh starvation. Generally people see right hand slosh starvation by the time they get down to 3/4 tank if not earlier. At 1/4 tank it’s going to be a mess.

The return correction kit you speak of is a CJM product (mine). It only applies to return fuel vehicles, and non return fuel vehicles don’t need it to have a functional siphon system. The stock regulator handles that.

Edit: I’m realizing now that you have a 350z. Those don’t slosh starve as bad as a 370z but at 1/4 tank you’re definitely pushing it.

I would get fuel starve after burning about six gallons at the track and it mostly happened on straights.

There was a right turn before. Was not sharp though. I held throttle around this right turn at about 75%.... then up to full throttle as my steering is straightening.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will assume the track incident is typical starvation....

But this past weekend, my fuel gauge was reading above 1/4 tank and was not starting. I added fuel and it started right up. Incorrect gauge reading due to an issue with the fuel pump basket?

When the weather gets better, I'll check it out. Good point though. Install went pretty smooth and I was careful with pulling the basket out (some twisting to clear the leveler)

I just remembered there was a left turn, then a quick right followed by a larger radius right before the straight. So the gas tank was turbulent before getting to the straight... as everyone has mentioned.

Wanted to report back on my last test.

I siphoned a bunch of gas out of the Z and took some hard corners and got the Z to turn off. But... my gas gauge was reporting just a tad below 1/4 tank. Car would not start anymore. Tank was basically empty after a few runs.

Any ideas? I could have sworn I was very careful taking the assembly out of the tank.

Sounds like typical 350z/370z fuel slosh starvation. But if the tank was truly empty on both sides, then it sounds like typical 350z/370z fuel level sensor problems.

I fuel starved with just under half a tank and the car wouldn't crank. I splashed fuel, and she turned right on.

I guess I will deal with it for now, but I just went to the gas station and filled it up to the top... gauge is not registering a complete full tank of gas. The delta is the same for when it is empty.

I'll replace the in-tank assembly.
