TT Tune on lower octane?
 

Hi all, I need help from those Turbo gurus out there. I am about to get my TT tuned out here in Korea and have some questions. The tuner out here is saying that he wants to tune my car at a 95 RON (equal to about 91 Octane) instead of the 98 RON (Equal to 93 Octane). His reasoning is because he says that alot of gas stations will say 98 RON but it will really be 95 RON. Now if he tunes it at 95 RON how bad will it be if I do get a real 98 RON in the tank? Should I be worried about tuning it at a lower RON?

If what he says about stations mislabeling the fuel is true, he's doing the right thing. If he tunes for 95, and you get real 98, your engine will just be MORE safe, not less. If on the other hand he tunes for 98, and you up with with 95 in the tank, that's dangerous.

Dope, I was looking for tuner when I was out in Seoul.

What's your availability of injecting methanol to assist w/lower octane fuels.
As I've heard guys in the states doing it w/93 pump gas & making good power.
This could be an option for you.

Might be a good idea to take a couple of weeks of vacation far south of your location, use the need for a tune as an excuse. Stay safe.

Tuning for lower octane will produce less power but your engine will love you if you are buying mislabeled gas.

As per Senna-F1, running higher octane fuel than what the car is tuned for will have no effect. You waste a little money buying unneeded octane but the engine won't notice. No worries.

If you are getting your 370z tuned by this tuner I would definitely do as your tuner requests because he is probably correct. Just make sure to use a high quality top tier gasoline. I do know with your TT set up detonation can and will damage your engine. I would use 95 RON/ 91 octane.

The track I go to has their own gas pumps but the price is pretty high so many people have gone into the small town gas station to get their "93". And a few of those people had blown their motors only to find bad gas in their tank.

Octane booster is your friend. Safety in a can.

Is there one that makes a real difference? All of the ones I seem to see around raise octane a few points, so your 91 becomes something like 91.4.

Tetraethyl lead.... But seriously, most of them are just ethanol. I've heard about people using toluene though.
