Do I REALLY need to wait?
So talked to our shop today and they mentioned 5,000 miles at a minimum put on the motor before going FI? Really? At this rate I'll have to wait a freakin year. My job and family make it so the Z isn't practical so looking for any and every reason to drive this thing and I'm still only at 800 miles. Was planning to wait until 1500 but 5,000??? Anyone have any input on this and have turboed a new car?

2000 miles on my new Mustang and it put down 707rwhp yesterday :) Boost was part of the first oil change and switch to synthetic.
Boost your Z whenever you want... just do a damn fine job of it so you dont mess up a brand new car before you even had a chance to enjoy it! |

With "old school" motors you had a lot of break-in to do before putting too much stress on them. Nowadays, motors are built to much closer tolerances and use materials that don't require a lot of break-in. I wouldn't be too afraid to do some light boost right off the showroom floor ... but 1500-2000 miles sounds like a good idea before pushing the limits (if for no other reason than to weed out any weak parts while under warranty).

Thanks guys! I'll stick to the plan then. My daily is going into the shop for some maintenance stuff, so I'll be putting some miles on her this week! :)

I had my motor built when I had the TT installed. After 1000 miles we changed to synthetic and retuned the car and it was making about 40 more wtq so my tuner ended up pulling close to 15% of the fuel off the break in tune. I am close to 1500 miles now and I know the motor is still getting stronger - a testament being that my drive side axle broke this weekend.
I don't know if there is a magic mileage number for break in and as others have said the motors are usually run through a 'pre-break in' at the factory these days. I'm guessing your shop is telling you 5000 miles to make sure everything is well seated and that they can get you a good tune without you having to come back frequently. |
I would try and plan a weekend road trip just you and a buddy. drive a big loop and put on a few miles. After that have at it!
