Full car plastidip in Koi Orange...

Love the way it came out... there are a few first timer mistakes but it passes the 6ft test! Fun project.

Not bad... almost looks like my matte red 3M vinyl.

Not too bad! If you've got texture issues and its not smooth.. You can wetsand the texture with 2000 grit. And then spray a coat of Naptha or Xylene over the top. Or a fresh coat. Both work great.

If I have any texture, I generally throw a full coat of naptha over the vehicle and let it self level out.

Good job though.

Good idea! I have some runs that I tried to fix, but then ran out of product to go over them with... I ordered some spray cans from DYC.. maybe I will try to 'fill' them in with spray and then Xylene the whole thing to smooth it out.

I would say "nothing like good ole Plasti-dip" but unfortunately Rustoleum seems to have created something very similar called Flex.

Nice job though! Cant even tell any problems from the pictures. Looks just like vinyl. You plan on keeping it on for a long time?

Good color for the state of FL.

Interesting to see how you applied it. You already covered most of the windshield and I am assuming the same with the rear hatch glass. The door glass and quarter were left uncovered along with the molding. Do you just peel it off where the overspray was on an undesired surface?

Sorry for the noob questions. I really want to dip my Z before my next track day to help preserve the paint. I was quoted $800-$900 for a local shop to do it.

Until I feel like changing it up! I didn't buy quite enough dip...so I am pretty sure I will need to dip it again before I could peel it off anyway. I am hoping to do some graphics in the next few weeks as well.

For the most part... in some places where there isn't a big enough gap between rubber/plastic trim and the body its hard to peel..(example: rubber around rear glass.... black plastic around side mirrors) I ended up cutting those areas with an X-acto knife but it didn't come out great and I slipped with the knife and accidentally scratched my paint in one spot=(. Next time I will mask these and pull the tape while my last coat is wet (standard procedure with dip).

I also didn't spray enough on the side windows to peel it easy - next time I will mask all the way to the moulding to save dip and hassle. Lots of lessons learned this first time!

$800 seems like an ok price... the whole kit from DYC was only $450 though (including dip) and now I can dip again for just the cost of the gallons. The project took me about 10 hours total - I expect to cut that down to 6 or 7 next time though now that I have experience.

That looks really good! I like how you did the black in the grill.

MagmaRed370z 10-30-2014 03:36 PM

Where did you buy the supplies?

Sweet! I was looking at the koi orange too but thinking of doing it with a pearl in the glossifier. How many gallons did you end up using?

NickTurnon 10-30-2014 03:55 PM

Just so everyone is aware. Plasti-dip is a good choice for starting. But there are other companies out there making fantastic products that should be noted as well. Check out HaloEfx, DuraDip, and Raail. Flexidip sold at Home Depot is crap. The Red is Pink, the White Runs like crazy, and they all smell worse then dip. Plus are super thinned.

To do the 370z yourself, its going to cost around $400-500 with the DIY DYC kit.

A shops average price should be anywhere from $650-800 for this size vehicle. Speedfreak, watch out on the $900 price point.

If anyone has any direct questions, I am an authorized installer for all the companies I mentioned and can help!

Used 1 gallon gun metal and 2 gallons of Koi. Wish I had bought 3 gallons of Koi.
