So...Pedals Fly Apart While Driving Apparently

Some people do take off the spring, but the problem now is that the pedal has a decent amount of side-to-side play in it, the engagement windows is even more narrow, and I worry that since the pedal has lateral movement in it, the rod/piston will unevenly wear in the master cylinder.

Going by the dealer, if they won't fix it then RJM. People with RJM, any lateral freeplay in the pedal?

Update, went to the dealership East Charlotte Nissan. The technician there was very helpful (he has owned several S13s and Z33s himself), this if the first case like this they have seen. The clutch system is warrantied for 12,000 mi or something so they can't do anything right now (I understand a limited warranty on the clutch) but I've contacted Nissan North America regarding the case as this is the actual bracket that failed and poses a safety hazard. Case number 159-527-67. On a related note, they have had 5 slave cylinder failures over the past few months.

RE: Consumer Affairs 159-527-67 Hello, I was recently at my Nissan Dealership (and have only good things to say about them regarding this). I was instructed to contact Nissan NA but I did want to open this dialogue through email. This is regarding the failure of the clutch pedal bracket on my 2011 Z. The mounting ear where the clutch helper spring attaches to the pedal sheared off while I was driving. This caused the pedal to become very firm, and the engagement window extremely narrow causing the vehicle to become difficult to drive. It also resulted in multiple parts falling behind the brake pedal while driving. I was informed that Nissan has a limited warranty on the clutch system (I understand this as the clutch may wear quickly during abusive driving), but this seems unrelated to metal parts shearing off while driving - posing a safety risk. There have been no similar cases related to this on the 370Z to my knowledge of that of my dealer. The Slave cylinder is known to fail on this particular model, but this is unrelated. The service manager at the dealership Gina and the technician (I believe his name was Joe?) were very helpful and I thank them. However, the fact remains that my car is still broken and my confidence in Nissan's build quality is seriously in jeopardy. I would like to have this issue resolved as quickly as possible so that I can go back to enjoying my Nissan. I also feel that this is a safety issue and should be repaired by Nissan. While the 370Z has its share of problems (eg, CSC, oil consumption), bad pedals doesn't seem to be one of them. Some people don't like the feel but not many failures have been reported (this is the first I've noticed on this site). You just got the random bad part that crops up every now and then on any car. Get it fixed and have fun. Good luck with Nissan. If the dealer you are using now gives you any problems about it being under warranty, try another dealer.

I have an OEM pedal you can have for free (or whatever shipping costs). But I recommend the RJM clutch pedal assembly

That's one of the things I love about the auto in my '14 Mazda3 as I hate the look of automatics without the boot. Why do most auto shifters have to be so damned ugly?!

Well that's a bummer. Glad nothing bad happened and you came through it safely. Good letter to Nissan North America. Hope they take care of it for you. I had a recent good experience with my local Nissan Service center too. They replaced my CSC & CMC under warranty. The nice thing was they allowed me to furnish the ZSpeed HD CSC and they installed it instead of the crappy plastic Nissan one. Hope you have the same kind of good luck with your repair.

Customer Service Rep called from Nissan (TN) today. I went over everything with her and she said she would call and speak to the local dealer Service Manager (Gina) to go over everything. She did seem confused that the technician didn't look inside my car to "diagnose it" and that I did't leave the car there - but I came in with the diagnosis and live near the stealership so am keeping it in the garage. Customer Service Lady said I'd hopefully hear back sometime early next week.
