Painting frp, with Automotive Touch Up products.
Hey y'all. Any of you guys have experience with painting frp with aerosol products? I recently just bought a carbon signal frp front lip from another member here. I don't want to spend a grip of money on paint and prep so I'm planning to do it myself. Have any of you guys had experience with Automotive Touch Up. Here is a link;
Touch Up Paint and Accessories | AutomotiveTouchup My buddy used it on his graphite S2k and paint match was spot on. Now my question is should I use an adhesion promoter for my front lip? I know adhesion promoter is for mainly for urethane and plastic materials but is it necessary for frp materials? I once had a ShineAutoProject lip for my rx7 back in the day and that did not require an adhesion promoter. Any advice on this or experience with product is greatly appreciated. Thanks:tiphat: |
i think you can buy primer with adhesion promoter. might want to look into that.
your store that you're getting the factory match paint should have it. you'll want to primer anyway to sand and smooth out any imperfections before you lay down the base coat. |
thanks for the input kenchan. wondering if carbon signal has any say on suggestion of prep and paint.

Avoid AutomotiveTouchup. I tried them at first a while back and they could not match the 40th paint at all even after four tries. Same with Paintscratch.com. Automotive touchup uses Sherwin William automotive paint/database and Paintscratch uses PPG...their economy line crap.
Adhesion promoter isn't required for FRP. Clean it well, filler work, primer, base, and clear. Are you using 1k or 2k clear? |
Thanks for the advice equalme, I'm using 2k with hardener. Donyou suggest a different clear? What brand paint are you using by the way for your door handles? It looks like most likely I'm going to go to one of the auto paint shops and order a can of aerosol 40thZ paint.

Just making sure you were using 2k clear...any is fine. I used spraymax 2k clear in a can and it sprayed nice but kinda pricey. But if you're able to spray the clear with an actual gun then spi clear is the best.
I use wanda hs paint for the door handles. Good quality paint for the price. I went with matrix refinish on the 40th paint for my bumper due to the recommendation from the paint store but they still couldn't match it 100%. What I've noticed is that the paint usually comes out too dark and not enough purple pearls. |
