Power Steering Reservoir Relocation

After failing to fabricate the Mishimoto aftermarket reservoir to our car last year and as I begin to work on replicating O&Gs wire tuck, I got to thinking about whether or not it would be possible to relocate the OEM reservoir. That being said has anyone tried it? Does anyone have any suggestions?

The only thing that I keep thinking about (and I haven’t checked to see if it’s even possible yet), Is to make a combo tank with the radiator overflow. I have an aftermarket overflow tank now and I’m wondering if I could do something like the ARC combo can but make the left side a power steering reservoir. Any thoughts? Would there be any restrictions with my idea? What about return lines any issues there?

theDreamer 06-16-2014 09:23 AM

In for ideas and results.
I know O&G and jtran produced an aftermarket overflow tank for the radiator combo with catch can. So you might be able to do a similar idea with the PS resevoir.

I have always been interested in moving mine, with my SC one of my lines rubs and has been replaced twice now. So reducing the distance or routing would be excellent!

Found the picture.

Yeah I have a overflow tank very similar to that. Mine is just painted.
I'm wondering if I'll run into trouble with the radiator hose.

Seeing the TS filter covers makes it seem like that might be a tight fit there.
An idea might be to move the overflow tank left or right a bit to free up some space for the PS resevoir.

Also, side note, what catch can setup is that? TS?

Wiggins3377 06-16-2014 09:30 AM

That's a good thought, would there be any issues with having longer lines than OEM going to/ from the reservoir? I don't know much about how it works. Any insight there would be helpful.

Yeah, they are Top Secret catch cans.

theDreamer 06-16-2014 09:32 AM

I know one of my lines is a little longer from the SC setup and I can hear a little noise from the pump working harder.
I don't know all the ins/outs of the fluid v the pump. I am sure at some point the pump would be working to much to move the fluid and cause problems.

Wiggins3377 06-16-2014 09:33 AM

I wonder if it's possible to make a small can that fits under the intake filter... Hmmm

Thanks for the input Dreamer, ill definitely look into the length of the lines. I assume if there is a way to make them shorter that's a benefit??

If anyone else wants to chime in it would be appreciated.

I relocated mine to the other side. Nothing crazy but it declutters things nicely...also better temps being away from turbo.

Interesting, you clearly needed the space on the other side ;).

And pics of how you ran the hose? Any pump issues?

I can take some later...it isn't too clean basically zip tied to the back side of the one fan to keep it away from any belt action.lol No issues so far other than I need to remake my pump inlet as it is leaking ever so slightly.

Wiggins3377 06-16-2014 11:50 AM

I figured you may have done that route. Any pics would be appreciated. I think Im going to try my one of my two ideas. Although I like the thought of splitting the overflow tank, Im leaning towards seeing if I can fit a small tank under the intake filters.

Yeah its a temporary setup. I have a new plan under way but im just being way too lazy right now.lol Im hunting through my phone for pics at the moment. If I find one I will post it.

Can I ask for some details of your failed efforts? I had a shop tell me they could fabricate a bracket for it without too much difficulty, but I just haven't bothered to move forward with it. I've had the PS reservoir sitting in my garage for over a year now. Note that I am mostly stock, so if you ran into configuration issues with your aftermarket parts, they may not affect me.

:tiphat:

Wiggins3377 06-16-2014 01:15 PM

I guess it was a combo of issues. The only way I could see the Mishimoto reservoir working is if you have some long tube intakes like the Stillen Gen 3s as this provides you with the most space in the OEM area. I was trying to make it work with the Top Secret intakes and there was just no way to do it with the filter covers (they are an awkward shape).

The Mishimoto tank is also a lot deeper than the OEM reservoir, so if you tried to mount it in the same location as OEM you would either hit your hood (causing it not to close) or would need to remove your fender liner. If I remember correctly their tank also causes issues because of the inlet locations. A couple people have made the 350z Weapon R tank work (talk to member Kukpet (his name is Petr)) and it looks pretty good, but I want to eventually shave that whole area to clean it up, so that's out for me.

All this said, im not a fabricator so maybe they could make it happen.

Wiggins3377 06-16-2014 01:17 PM

Another option would be to cut the mishimoto reserviour in half, shorten it and reweld it back together... that actually could work for my project if there is room under the filter covers. Hmm...

Excellent info sir :tiphat:

Yes, my R2C intakes are not going to be as intrusive as your TS intakes. However, I was primarily concerned that the shop did not take into account the orientation of the line connections when they told me it would be fine. I didn't even think about the height issue. I guess I'll just procrastinate for another year or two :icon17:

better yet, sell me your Mishimoto reservoir and buy the Weapon R one... that is after I get under my car and take some measurements.

theDreamer 06-16-2014 01:34 PM

Just looked up the Weapon R stuff, looks good, and would be curious about fitment on a 370z v 350z.

MyKindaGuise 06-16-2014 01:38 PM

Weapon R's stuff is pretty snazzy. I too have a mishimoto res but it is too tall for stock location. If your looking for one Wigs I don't mind parting with it.lol

PM me an offer after you know. I will gladly sell it to you if you can use it

What PS reservoir does he have?

Wiggins3377 06-16-2014 02:04 PM

He modified the weapon r for the 350z. I think he just removed a bracket

Interesting, I might have to invest in that one. I like it, and PC black works for me (want the same for my overflow tank).

I did a little investigating and here's what I've determined, making a overflow/ PS reservoir combo will create a lot of clutter in the engine bay so that's out (after all I'm trying to clean it up) so I did a little more searching and I'm thinking I could fit a small tank in the spot pictured below. It's the area right under the windshield wiper fluid fill spot, I can't remember what was originally there, but I remember removing it when I removed the OEM air box and installed my Stillen Gen 3s. I'm thinking the Mishimoto tank is my best bet so Im in the market ;). This project will have to be delayed for a bit but I'm hoping to tackle it in the next few weeks.

Just a thought but the Mishimoto tank is aluminum, can aluminum be welded?

You engine bay is so clean man!!

Here's another idea, thanks for Rid3_FaMOuS. This is the method I think ill actually pursue as I think ill be able to use the OEM reservoir. Mount it up near the front crash bar, then just run the hose to the right locations.

Here is a pic of his car as a reference.

simota1 06-17-2014 12:12 PM

Yes aluminum can be welded

Pictures don't do it justice. Petr is about 2 hours from me and I've seen his Nismo a couple time, its a great looking car.

Kuk did you have your timing chain cover sent out to be polished of do the work yourself? I'm trying to get some ideas on how to do the damn cam sprocket covers they are turning out "alright" but not up to par for me.

Sn love the car dude! I take copious amounts of pictures of it every time I see it at IFO haha

Thanks...I did it last winter old school way. Started with I think 150 grid up to 2000. Bought some cheap polishing kit for final look. 30 hours later you will like it :)

I've polished sooooo much! My fingers are sick of sanding! Lol
Between restoring the finish on my intercooler and piping and a few other things I'm just burnt out. I may revisit it at a latter date then. Thank you for the insight though man!
