IMHO some of the brand name products that we use to 'beautify' our dash/interiors are the major culprits, hence the sticky, cracking and melting of the dash. I love the idea of wrapping the dash in alcantara but it is expensive.
My Z is a garage queen. and when it is parked in the sun, a sunshade is always placed at the windshield, and those are almost rare occasions. In Louisiana, Cold is not something we know too much about ... Also, I have NEVER used anything on my dash except damp rag to wipe the dust off. Just recently, to clean up the sticky mess, I found a specific Dash Cleaner with no harsh chemicals (took some doing - I'll post the name when I get home...) and used that to clean the mess up. I also do not happen to think the dash on the Z is made of any cheap materials to any extent...

I can safely say that none of the culprits you mentioned are what is causing my dash to have the melt-down look. I believe it is a defect from the factory.
