My first job when I was 16 was best buy geek squad "lulz now" and I remember the manager saying their #1 proffit bringer AT THE TIME was car audio. Between 200-500% markup from what BB got the equipment for. Stupid consumers=stupid prices. And smart fat cats bank on that. So instead of complaining how expensive it is, stop buying it or like products "on a mass scale" and that will force prices down. I want one too, and the seats. But you have better luck just buying them straight from Recaro and customizing them by the time nissan gets done inflating the greed price.
Price is the price.

Steering wheels for other cars, S Audi's, M cars etc are all similar or significantly more $$.

The prices are paid for 90% of OEM parts by insurance co's and dealers so for in repairs etc, its driven by a market.

If Nissan sells 20, 2015 Nismo steering wheels to private consumers in the USA in a year, I'd be surprised if its that many. We can't move the market on the price for something like this.

well, what you do is buy their cover for 100 something, then have a local installer sew the new one on! I have a spare steering wheel I might be putting up FS so keep an eye out if you wanna go that route

Oh really? PM me if you want to sell it! I'll buy it ASAP! I've asked 2 different vendors about getting a custom wheel done and I get a price and no further dialogue.

There is also the full custom route of YOUR DESIGN OUR WORKS. Galeforce has one of their wheels, it's quite nice, also quite expensive. I'm still trying to decide if I want to pull the trigger on one.

Felt this wheel up in a couple of nismos at auto shows. The red bit is an individual piece so you can feel the indentations on the sides. It looks really good in person. Much nicer than our normal boring black wheels. $1000 is def too much though. It's still the same shape as normal steering wheels.

The custom wheel that I was quoted from DCTMS is $950 + core. This was for a full remold, complete alcantara and a red center stripe. The shape would be similar to this

I'm pretty sure that is actually Galeforce's wheel. Ivan, from DCTMS, attached it to my inquiry email as an example.

So if you are going to drop a grand, do it on something special.
