Rhino Liner or similar as chip guard?
Picked up my Nismo skirts and bumper last night from body shop. Looking to put some kind of chip guard on the underside of skirts, wondering if anyone has used any type of spray bedliner for this. Seems like it would durable, easy to apply. I used a chip guard tape on the underside of my rear spats and that seems to be holding up well after 6 months of driving.
Opinions? |

A clear bra of some brand would seem to make more sense since it's less intrusive and easily removable/replaceable.
I've been very impressed with the way the 3M Scotchguard I had installed handles bugs. A little waterless wash, detail spray, or Novus plastic cleaner and they wipe right off without scrubbing. |

That might, never thought of that although it seems like a cure all. SEM has a chip guard in an aerosol can, might stop by a body supply place and look for something similar, it comes in high texture and I assume a less textured version. Have used their products in the past with positive results.

I've seen several cars/trucks with spray-on "bed liner" in the wheel wells that seemed to do an excellent job. Should work just as well for what you want to do. As with any other coating, preparation is the key - make sure it has a good surface to stick to.
I have no experience with PlastiDip but, from what I've read, it is too soft and wouldn't hold up in your application. YMMV

I don't think PlastiDip is durable enough either. I put it on my diffuser a few months ago to check out what it would look like black and it hasn't held up that well. It's got a bunch of dings from little rocks and stuff out on the road (I presume). The problem with the 3M stuff is I think you'd have to wait a few months for the paint to cure before applying it. I was going to have my side skirts repainted and have the body shop install 3M but they said it wasn't a good idea so soon after paint. Regarding durability of 3M, I have to say I'm really impressed. I had the whole front of my car done when new and I don't have a single rock chip up front. I highly recommend it. As mentioned earlier, bug clean up is simple and easy too. I've thought about having my local spray in bed liner shop do the underside of my skirts as well. In fact I've had them off the car and into his shop for him to take a look at. Never pulled the trigger though. Need to get them resprayed first. Really I need to get a new set so I can have them sprayed, let them set a few months, and have the 3M installed. For your application, on the underside of the skirts, I think the spray on bed liner would work well as long as you keep it to the underside where it won't be seen.

Clear bra is the only way to go. Rhino liner will add weight and look hideous. Also I would be more worried about the paint you can see vs the paint underneath.... I had clear film on my front of my old 350z and nothing on side skirts and had zero rock chips on the sides... waste of money.

When in my posts did I say I wanted to do the sides of my skirts? I only want to do the bottoms that will not be seen unless working on car, so for me it's not a waste of money. As much as I want the top to look good I want want tbe underside to look nice also..

You can get this stuff in a bucket and roll it on. From what I read, it is epoxy based. I plan to do the same with my front lip once I finish some minor repairs on it.

I am sure the Rhino liner would work. I know West Coast Customs did an entire Camaro awhile back (yes, I realize your are only doing the undersides). It is one tough product and should take the abuse of little stones and pepples with ease.

Grabbed one of my old skirts and decided to give it a go and see if this is worth it. Scuffed up a small area, taped it off, gave it 3 coats with 5 minute wait in between, decided to use Duplicolor Truck Liner as that seems to not have that goop look to it. This is paintable once dry so could even give it a gloss look.
Sorry for a crappy cell phone pics. Just used regular pinstriping to create my line, didn't bleed underneath so line was nice. Only 10 minutes after last coat and decided to remove tape, probably too early and still tacky, but you get the idea, 3 coats gave a nice build up but still somewhat smooth finish. op- going by your logic, why bother even coating it if you cant see it?
like my mom who's also old, she's like 'kenchan why do you put all these things on your cars when you can't even see it while driving? " she has a point... but good thing for me, everything is photoshopped. you should just photoshop too. |
