Has anyone "black housed" the DRL LEDs on the '13 +?

I've been searching and searching and I can't find anything on this. I'd like to open the LED housings in the bumper under the headlights and black out the inside of those to match the Headlights when I get around to do them. Has anyone had any experience in doing this?

6MT-Z34 05-29-2014 11:01 AM

how about vinyl them?

mselph544 05-29-2014 12:12 PM

Like a vinyl overlay?

6MT-Z34 05-29-2014 12:17 PM

Check out user Scone. He tinted his DRL's and they look badass on a black Z.

He said he did it the same way as baking the headlights, you should reach out to him for more info

There was someone on here that had completely removed the DRL and I think had modded up some brake cooling.

DangJones 06-01-2014 03:07 AM

What do you guys think of a potential yellow overlay? Someone photoshop please.

What is the sense of blacking them out when they are always on during the day, anyway? Granted, it looks better when the car is parked, if that's what you are trying to attain. .........I removed mine completely.

zilverbullet 06-06-2014 11:59 AM

I agree that blacking the drls don't really make sense since they are supposed to be lit up!

I'm considering a tint but I like the leds as it sets our '13s apart

Been thinking about this since I bought mine two months ago. I traditionally always yellow film my fogs. In fact I still have a roll of film but not sure to pull the trigger on this one or not.

Also to OP. The silver inside the LED is what makes the light output so much bright, blacking it out will make the output lower.

Looks good.

Now all we need is a center lower black cover for our bumpers?

ZBro16 06-06-2014 01:09 PM

Who used VHT? Did you just remove the bumper and DRLs to spray them? I'm considering a method to get my DRLs to match up with my theme. At the same time, if BlueBat made some overlays I think that would be satisfactory.

Got_Z 06-06-2014 06:30 PM

Personally I would black them out or remove them too. The LEDs are a distraction from the lines of the car and quite frankly ugly IMHO. Good luck OP

I'm worried if I put the yellow film on then once if I don't like them it may peel a layer of the plastic lense off from the led lights.

I remember this occurring when I test fitted some yellow film to some dodge nitro headlights. When I removed the film a layer of the headlight plastic also came off.

Hmm, I wonder if we could remove the DRLs, inserts some mesh like SteveBad did, and then run some kind of modified tubing through or around the wheel well to mimic the effects of the Stillen brake cooling kit?

Nick M 05-07-2015 12:41 PM

Vinyl or paint etc on projecting lights, just dims the lights and looks like it belongs on a 1997 Eclipse.

If you're going to add black to projecting lights, paint the actual housings, dont dim the lights.

And if you're going to do black housing DRL's, then please do black housing headlights so it all matches.

Maybe i'm just anal and like things done right, and the theme matches the whole car etc.

I did mine yellow DRL. I quite like it. Also as a safety stand point since yellow has a shorter wave length.Attachment 103188

I talked to 180 customs who is very well known for their headlight modifications about black housing some of the chrome on my 15 Nismo Drl's and they said they wouldn't touch them. They tried it with a GT-R's drl's and said it was a pretty much a pain. They had to cut to open the drl's instead of just baking them and pulling them apart. I'd assume the same would have to be done with regular 13+ drl's. The 13+ drl's actually cost more than the GT-R and 2015 Nismo Drl's.

DRL Tint Info

What brand tint and how dark (percentage) did you go to match your headlight housings? Or did you use VHT Nightshades. If that's the case then how many coats did you do? They look great together!

Bumping this from the dead.

Anyone attempted this mod for their DRLs? 180 says you have to cut them, but only references GTR DRLs.

OptionZero 06-05-2017 03:26 PM

are you talking about a wrap? I think any good vinyl /tint place should be able to apply tint wrap to them and cut to fit easily

Nope.. I mean opening them up and painting the chrome housing to match modified headlights. Haven't found any evidence of anyone doing it here, I think most people just wrap or spray with VHT Niteshade.
