Urgent: check engine light

I have an 09' 370z manual trans with 41k miles. So prior to this engine light I had this rattling noise when I pushed the gas around 3k rpm. This morning I turned the car on and drove about 1/4 mile down the street of my house., and the car completely shuts off. What should I do ? Replace battery? Call geico and have them tow it to nissan?

Pull the code. Either get the car up to autozone and use their scanner, or put out feelers in your local subforum for someone with an OBD scanner or an uprev cable+cypher.

yah, get the code first. then it will probably tell you your o2 sensor fell off or something.

So tow it to autozone?

Unless towing is free for you, it would be cheaper to buy someone local a six pack for coming by with a code scanner.

I don't really know anyone with a code scanner .. How much does a scanner cost anyway?

That's why I suggested you post in your regional forum here and ask if someone with the ability to scan a code can help you.

My code scanner cost $99.

Ok thanks man I appreciate it. I'll post another thread in the regional forum and see what happens.

How about calling your insurance company? Chances are you have 24-hour roadside assistance with towing assistance. Am I missing something here?

Right ... I have geico.. I'm just thinking whether I should send it to the dealer or autozone. Not sure if it is a warranty issue or non-warranty issue

At 41k I doubt it's a warranty claim unless you bought an extended warranty.

ZoroItaliano 05-14-2014 11:03 AM

Ehh I have to review my information ... I can't believe this is even happening at 41k

You don't even know what's happening yet. Take a breath. It could just be a plugged cat or something simple. I'm assuming you've kept up on maintenance and the car has the appropriate amount of oil in it. Did you recently fuel up? There's a lot of things it could be ranging from relatively minor to catastrophic. Most issues tend to be on the more minor side of that spectrum.

ZoroItaliano 05-14-2014 11:11 AM

I've done my oil changes ..

And the car currently has the appropriate amount of oil in it? Some 09's had an oil consumption issue. If your car doesn't burn oil and hasn't had issues in the past, it is likely the problem isn't a catastrophic issue.
