Minor bumper damage - Grrrrrrr

1 Attachment(s)
Ya gotta love A-holes that run into your parked car and leave the scene, so when you come out of the grocery store to load your trunk you find the damage. Mind you, I'm OCD, so this minor amount of damage isn't acceptable and will have to be repaired. 2010 PW roadster. It looks like a hole punch in my rear bumper cover, but there's actually a shallow dent about the size of a quarter. I'm guessing someone backed straight into my car and the license plate bolt on their rig punctured my bumper.

No, covering it with a bumper sticker isn't an option :rofl2:

Problem is, the repair is easy. But to blend pearl white and not leave any tape marks I'm sure the painter is going to want to remove and install the entire rear cover, which is going to rack up the labor hours. New emblems, etc. I'm going for an estimate tomorrow.

Sorry to hear man hopefully it won't thin your wallet

Sad but do not turn a claim into your insurance carrier. They will for sure
figure out a way to twist your story and blame you. Best of luck......

That would be really hard to paint match due to the location and obviously 'cause pearl white is the devil to painters. If it were in a different location such as all the way in the corner near the splash guards then it would most likely be a lot easier and doable.

I was quoted $400 to fix a slightly smaller dent on my bumper right below the 370z emblem. $400 to respray the entire bumper or else it wouldn't look right and my car is red. :ugh2:

Sorry to hear. Man I hate stupid inconsiderate drivers. Good luck on the repair. I had a deep scratch on my door that went thru the clear and the paint when I bought my car. The dealer said it would be really difficult to paint match the color. I took it to a friend of mine who's been in the paint business for 20 years and he's very good at his craft. He did an incredible job and the paint match is perfect. Get the right repair shop and you'll be fine.

I had the exact same thing happen to me way back when in my old 350z. Cost $350.

Vorttam 05-07-2014 11:06 AM

Ouch, sorry to read about your bad luck.

jaedub 05-07-2014 11:55 AM

Ouch. Look for DIY videos in youtube. Im sure you can fix that without re-doing the whole rear bumper.

sorry to hear OP, i just had my PW front bumper resprayed myself. My brother in-law backed in to the Z as he was backing his car out of the driveway. I took it to a local body shop and the guy charged me $250 (paid for by the in-law) but only because there was no body damage to fix only paint peeled off from the bumper itself. With my vin the shop was able to get the factory PW paint from a local nissan dealership. It looks spot on color wise except since they wet sanded it and buffed the bumper to make sure it looked perfect i feel it looks alot newer then the rest of the car if that makes any sense at all. Guess I'll just have to get a full paint detail for the car soon. Hope it all works out bud.

From a body shop estimator opinion, the 3 stage PW is not that hard of a color to match; but since that is in the middle of the bumper, best advice is to remove it yourself at home bring it to a body shop and have them paint and color match it for you. Also that dent will require some heating on their side to get it out, I say roughly with loose bumper it would be 350$

Why would you suggest he remove it? Wouldn't you want the painter to be able to compare it to the other panels on the car (or at least the adjacent rear fender panels) to ensure an exact match?

batzmaru nismo emblem? :ugh:

Because shop will charge you R&I time and regardless plastic will never match metal 100%, most shop can color match the car with a fender.

Yeah I'm a manager at a body shop so I know all the ways of the trade. If you have any question ask away.

Yeah the plastic vs metal was something I wasn't thinking about. I've seen metal panels with completely different shades of the same OEM color code, so that's where I was coming from. I guess the main concern should be finding a competent shop. If they are any good, they will have no troubles fixing it up right.

I know what you mean; I see it all the time too. Before you paint (most) shop are supposed to color tint, meaning making sure the color matches before going to the paint booth. But yeah most respectable shop will be able to get it done within two days.

That's not JDM enough.

bbquest 05-07-2014 04:49 PM

Thanks all for the support and advice. My estimate is $808.43

I did personally speak with the painter and he confirmed what everyone has said. The cover needs to come off so he can get at the back side with some heat. He wasn't concerned with blending the pearl, and with the cover off he can clear the whole thing without having to mask anything.

I don't have a deductible and my Metlife agent said it won't impact my rates since it's a no fault claim, so I'm going to bite the bullet and turn it in.
