JLbrenne is correct, you either program it into your current FOB or many times have an additional one. Which unlocks the car and a spring pushes the door out slightly which allows you to reach in and pull the door open.
Having a charged battery is a requirement, but for most who drive everyday or at least once a week it should not be an issue.
