Back about 35-40 years ago, auto manufacturers started to study and change the layout of some of the controls in cars and somewhat standardize them across brands. One of these advancements was putting the turn signal stalk closer to your fingertips (provided you keep your hands on the wheel where they belong), adding a "lane change" function where you could push partially up or down on the stalk to blink and when you took pressure off it would reset, and the push forward for brights and pull back to flash function, all integrated on that stalk. Gone was the old push button on the firewall for the high beams.
Intermittent wiper functions and a one touch sweep feature became fairly standard for the wiper stalk.
The point of these design changes was to allow drivers to operate the functions by finger touch while keeping their hands on the wheel. Seriously, it's not that difficult.
