Default Start button takes its sweet time

I saw a car commercial and when the start button was pressed the car started right away. And when I use a key in my other cars the car starts right away. But not the Z.

It seems to think for a full second before the car actually starts to turn over. Why is this? Does it need to build up a charge or something? Why can't it start right away instead of waiting? Call me impatient. But that's what I want.

I don't have that problem

People that have the steering lock fuses puked say that there is an extra delay, but since you have a '14, you don't have that problem

Mine used to take about a second to crank up. Battery was dieing.. Then I got a brand new $$ premium battery.. Now it fires up before I can blink.

If your car is manual, it could be he clutch pedal sensor.

Is there a way to reduce how far the clutch has to be in for this? I don't really bottom the clutch out while driving, and having do crank my foot all the way down to start the car is annoying.

My 2009 auto does the same thing on start up: thut-thut-thut-thut-thut-thut-VROOM! I've had the car for 5 years and its always started like that. The manual I test drove did the exact same thing. Start up takes the same amount of time whether car is hot or cold. It's normal. Its just what they do.

There may be. I don't have to bury my clutch to get it started.

There is not a direct connection between the starter button and the engine. The button is depressed and the signal goes to the computer. The computer then checks to see if everything is a "go" and then the signal is sent to the starter. After about one second, the car starts. Mine does this as well, so I don't think there is a problem or anything that you can do to speed up the process.

So, the speed of light is too slow?

The car and your key-fob do an encrypted RFID handshake. This involves passing of public/private key pairs with known lists of "correct" challenge/response pairs. This involves quite a bit of back and forth between the key and the car, as well as range verification and such. This isn't the entirety of the extra time needed, but it's a chunk of it. I'm sure the rest is the ECU checking vital sensors/systems before startup.

It's a disadvantage to not having a physical key. With a physical key, you don't need encryption, as the key itself serves as the same layer of protection as the encryption. Thus, physical key = much faster.
