Tow Strap

I did a quick search and didn't find anything. So here it is. I need to do a little fabricating to get my Takata tow strap to work with the OEM tow hook mount. That said does anyone know what size bolt (thread count/ depth) I need to use the OEM mount?

Wiggins3377 12-12-2013 07:26 AM

anyone?

can you pull out your factory tow hook from the trunk and take it to the store (ace hardware) to get that measured or matched up to a nut?

This is what I was thinking, but I'm not positive Ace will have what you you need. I used to have a specialty store called Threaded Products that made specialty bolts/nuts and had a ton of crazy stuff in stock ready to go. You mkght want to do a search for some kind of store like that by you.

yah, usually ace has wat i need. they at least have the most metric selection in my area.

yep, I've seen the Ace's that have literally everything. I used to live near one. Now there's not one anywhere close to me and the one I'm thinking of is closed down. I know my local ace might have a bolt that big, but it would never have a hardened bolt that I'd want for a job like this. Probably just a stainless steel one.

yah, i would get the diameter size and pitch, then order grade10 or something from grainger or macmaster carr or something. :)

thanks guys. I think im just gonna have someone cut the OEM hook to the threads and weld the mount from the Takata strap to it. Im sure this wouldnt hold up well if it needed to be used, but Im just going to buy another OEM hook. For me the strap is more for show anyway.

kenchan 12-12-2013 01:09 PM

if it's just for show, just use some 3M mounting tape... :ugh:

oh, and dont forget the TOW => sticker.

someone should make TIRE => stickers and put them on all 4 corners.

from the zcarzero tow strap. im thinking of doing this myself for a takata strap

I really want a red tow strap, not sure where to get one.

OMGWTFBBQ 12-16-2013 09:10 PM

I know Macht Schnell makes a red tow strap for BMWs. If you can find an adapter to accept the Macht Schnell tow strap on one end and attach to your OEM tow hook thread size and pitch on the other end, that might be helpful.

I'm not sure that would work with the Takata strap. The mounting bracket is different. You'd have it hanging out of the front bumper, plus you'd have to bend the bracket at a 90 degree angle.

I'm having someone fabricate a new bracket very similar to the one in this link to use with my Takata strap.

discharge strap

What you can also try is the following:

1. Drill a hole into the front bumper support, maybe on the bottom since the top is hidden by the front bumper.
2. Weld on a nut to hold the bolt in place.
3. Secure your Takata tow strap.

Horrible instructions but here's a picture LOL.

why through the trouble when you can just use superglue? they can hang cars with their strong bond. :ugh:
