Annoying Shifter Rattle

Hello everyone! Well I've had this problem since I picked up the car and now that I can't play music for a week or so, its really getting to me. My shifter has an extremely annoying rattle/buzz (more of a buzz) coming from the top of it. It sounds like plastic rattling around. It happens over 2.5K RPMS, so during cruise it is constant. When I push down on the shifter head (push with a finger on the 123456R pattern, not the whole shifter assembly), even very lightly, it stops.

I tried searching for a fix, but it seems people only experience the whole unit rattling. Mine seems to be coming from the top only. Anyone know what is causing this problem and how to fix it? It's driving me absolutely crazy. :icon14:

I have that problem with mine too. I just bought a weighted shifter and got rid of the stock one. Sorry, that's probably not much help

Rattle

I test drove a few 370z before I figured out it was a common problem. It only seems to happen at high RPM.

it could be the metal spacer that sits right under the knob. its got a bevel on the inside to mate with the tapered part of the shaft.

if you can remove the knob, then i would put a washer (or maybe even a rubber grommet) on top of that spacer and re-tighten your knob. that might take care of it.

the stock knob and be a royal pita to remove... :ugh:

I had the same problem and a rubber grommet (I used a couple of garden hose washers) took away the rattle totally.

But the interesting part is that it doesn't rattle down there. It only happens at the very top of the shifter. When I push down slightly on the flexible leather top, it stops. I don't even touch the shifter assembly. I don't understand how a metal spacer at the bottom affects the very top of the shifter where the rattle comes from. I'm going crazy kenchan. The men in white will come soon. I know it. :eekdance:

i think it's just resonating on the shaft and it just sounds like it's coming from the top?

have you tried removing the knob? that would be your first step. :D try adding the grommet.

Well you know that the stock knob is a multi-piece affair, perhaps something internally is vibrating...

kenchan 11-04-2013 01:32 PM

remove the knob yet?

the chance of wrecking the OEM knob while removing it is extremely high thus I will suggest Mr.Elan just change the knob...

I doubt he can remove the knob without wrecking the leather...

not doubting OP's ability, but it happens 90%+.... :icon17:

yah, some lucky folks got the friday 4:58pm production car where they forgot to use loctite. those were apparently easy to remove. :icon17:

Fountainhead 11-04-2013 03:26 PM

I got pissed off at mine and took a pipe wrench to it. Peeled the pleather right off of the ball and then caught on the plastic and it came off. I pieced it back together but it'll never look new again....Thing was tight!

I just use a wrench to take it off, didn't really care about if I could damage it after knowing 90% of the case it will get wrecked... :bowrofl:

I've heard that which is why I'm reallyyyy not looking forward to removing it. I just love the feel of the stock knob. Reminds me of my 350. :(

Elan 11-06-2013 12:05 AM

Well I think the problem is the little leather piece on top of the shifter. Does anyone know how to take it off or fix it without destroying it?
