Emblem Adhesive
Good morning, does anyone know offhand what the name of the OEM adhesive is called that Nissan uses to attach their brand badges to the front and rear of the car?
I have an emblem off and would like to reattach it properly without utilizing 3M 2 sided tape, which I know will work but would just rather use factory OEM stuff. From the looks of the residue left on the car it almost looks like a injected type material, tar like. Any help greatly appreciated. |

How do you know the OEM stuff isn't 3M?

The FSM will sometimes list non-Nissan tools and consumables.

yah, you can use 3M mounting tape for exterior or automotive.
i suppose if you want to go the extra mile, get some VHB tape, but that imo is overkill for something small like emblems. |
i used to work at a body shop before i got a real job. worked on my own 370z. 99% sure factory adhesive is almost exactly the same as the 3m product, just depends on the thickness you desire. i've reattached emblems with the 3m product and there is no difference and not noticeable.

Industrial Super glue if you fear your emblem falling off.

yep, i wouldn't be surprised if nissan and bodyshops are buying the same 3M tapes. 3M has a HUGE selection of tapes so it's a matter of getting the right one for the application. which sometimes can be pretty confusing... |

+ sheet metal screws. yes, that will keep it on probably. Quote:

the previous owner superglued the emblem on the bumper after crappily painting it. when i went to remove it, most of the paint from behind the emblem peeled up as well

Wowza lots of info, thanks all. Its not that I refuse to use 3m double back tape, its that that is what I used and it was centered when installed but the following day sun (I assume) it shifted down almost to the point it had shifted over the outside bottom edge of the recess.
I didn't want to mention it because the emblem I installed is a forum regular supplier but if it helps me get this fixed maybe the info will help. I got a pair, front and back, of the EVO R chrome Z emblem with black carbon fiber backing. The reason I assumed OEM adhesive was different was because the original nissan emblem was held in place by a tar like substance the had rounded edges similar to when a tube of adhesive gets spread out then pressed between two solid flat surfaces. also if need be I can get some pictures put together so everyone can see what I'm dealing with. Let me know, and again thanks for all the advice and help. •edit- picture of issue... http://www.the370z.com/members/baura...2163-image.jpg Sorry if picture isn't clear enough from the angle but in eyesight you can see the overlap at the bottom where its sliding out of the recess and the top gap in the picture is between 3/8" and a 1/4" below where I originally set it. Very VERY noticeable in person, at least to me |
I just set my emblem today using automotive 3m tape. The emblem has mounting holes. It should not move. Maybe it's your aftermarket emblem?

thanks for the help all and to the mod for moving this to the appropriate place, sorry for making thread in wrong place. |
I had that same emblem and ended up getting rid of it because I could never get it to sit "right"
|
So which 3M tape is everyone referring to? I keep wanting to take off front and rear badges and paint them black but I'm not sure what to use to re-adhere it to the car.

3m VHB is super strong, id use that.
http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...=5485815&rt=c3 they make different thicknesses as well which might help you make that emblem look a bit more natural |
this thread is a few days old but i removed all of my emblems including the "370z" and "nismo" and reattached using the 3m tape and have had no issues and thats even with it sitting under this hot texas sun
