Custom hood vents

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ps2f723e64.jpg

I know this has been talked about before with the GTR style vents. But I just noticed along with the Evo, the new 2014 Corvette also uses hood vents that they place very far forward on the hood. Probably why Subaru places their hood scoop so far back because the further back the air is drawn into the engine bay instead of in the front where the hot air will blow out like the corvette is designed to.

There was a s2000 that did this from the front to back but that guy looked like he had skill. This do-it-yourself looks a little easier. What does everyone think of it.? I want to do it and make it look like one big piece on the Corvette or the Evo.

What hood is this ?

SouthArk370Z 09-14-2013 01:10 AM

What are you trying to accomplish? Get more cold air into the engine compartment? Extract hot air? Just for looks?

Get out air hot just like the evo and vet. Sorry I wasn't clear enough.

I think the difference is on the subaru the scoop is used to funnel cool air INTO the top mounted intercooler, whereas on the vette the cool air goes INTO the front of the car, cools the radiator, and exits out the top vent. Also this would help minimize lift at high speeds by reducing positive pressure in the engine bay.

cooltoy 09-14-2013 12:59 PM

Should be interesting.

Well some guys even add scoop deletes with just a vent plate. So for them the timc is still getting used unless they go FMIC but then they get a block off plate instead of a vent. I didn't hear much complaining so the vent at the back is still sucking in instead of blowing out like the front should. Good to know about high speed though. Plan to do a whole under body tray out of aluminium like all super cars have to help.

PS: Can you please share what tools you used to cut/trim the metal?

Sure. Drilled holes then used a cut off wheel on my drill...

Then used a sanding stone to smooth the edges and debur. On the inside I used dikes to cut the reenforcement back an inch so I get room to glue the mesh to.

I also laid down a strip of metal as a guide for the wheel so my lines where straight. You can see it in the pic in post 11.

Are you planning on putting some mesh and/or ducting inside? Very ballsy, looks good! Should help vent the coffin-like engine compartment.

To time consuming and money. I'm to rough to do that and not cover it up.

Thanks. Yes, it's drying right now from painting it black.

Reinventing the wheel!

Props for doing it yourself!

I'm going with the norm, nismo RS vents with a Aston Martin/BMW vent near the windshield...

Well lets hope air flow goes out and not in.

Pics of this setup? As the main topic on this subject, won't a back vent do more harm than good?

Ps I just saw a post from 2011 from you on that hood, what you waiting for?!

Kingbaby 09-15-2013 05:04 AM

I did cut a hood and ruined it already! Next attempt is within my reach

synolimit 09-15-2013 01:48 PM

Ouch!

Kingbaby 09-15-2013 01:55 PM

Lol yea should of seen my face, when the cut went slightly off....

In for your finish!

Chuck33079 09-15-2013 02:16 PM

It takes a pair to start cutting out a hole on the hood. That's one of those "Gotta get it right on the first shot" types of mods.

i ran one of these and a louver when I had a front mount on my STI. Worked great. http://www.kstech.biz/servlet/the-26...I-scoop/Detail

No idea. Don't have logging tools and coolant never leaves 7th dot. Oil we'll see, I have to get on a track.

theDreamer 09-15-2013 04:44 PM

The water temp gauge is worthless, you might see lower oil temps but probably not. A vent like that will benefit the water/rad setup along with keeping engine bay temps down.

I have been doing data logging with an oem hood and will be adding a seibon TS style soon to run comparisons. This should give a good idea of positive or negative air pressure under the good.

Better hurry, summers almost over.

For DD and traffic it will defiantly work! Heat comes out this thing like a mother!

Nut_N_Much 09-15-2013 05:10 PM

Good job man, you have big balls cutting into a 2013 hood. Congrats it came out looking really clean. +1 Rep

RN SHARK 09-15-2013 05:25 PM

I've been thinking of adding some heat escape vents into the Z's hood after I've seen first hand how effective they are on the hood of my SRT Cherokee.
OP, looks good and gutsy move!

skidad62 09-15-2013 05:26 PM

looks good... how did you secure it underneath?

370Z JT 09-15-2013 06:51 PM

I don't know. It looks good on the vette. Not so much on the Z. Maybe a front shot will change my opinion.

I know everyone's a critic and big props to you for even attempting something like this, but I wonder if something a little more pointed would have looked better?

Like this maybe?

Adding a string the air is defiantly moving back and up from the vent! So that's very good news. Also at a light the heat is just pouring out. Even with the car shut off, its like a fan blowing hot air in your face. Its insane how hit this motor gets. This really should be effective!

Clean silicone for windows and doors. Working temp of -60 to 400*. Will never crack, peel, leak etc. will flex and move and not cause an issue.

Any concerns about rain?

Off the top of my head, new vet, evos, subis, aston's etc don't have issues and all engines are protected water sealed plugs. Also I'm not the first on a Z so no, it will be fine.
