Install car PC in dash storage box?
Hey guys:
Just wondering if anyone has any experience installing custom screens in the dash storage compartment that resides above the double-din radio. I am thinking about doing two things 1) Installing a nice touch-screen navigation system in the existing double-din radio slot along with new speakers, etc. 2) Removing the dash storage compartment, and installing this in its place: 2Din Car PC Mini ITX SE | Custom Car Computers My questions are: How much room do I have in and around the dash glove box to work with? Will a double DIN radio sized device fit there? My biggest concern here is the depth, as it's impossible for me to determine how much room I'd have without pulling the dash apart. Is there a pass-through of any kind from the dash storage box to the radio bay below, or will I need to cut? How much can I expect to spend for the molded plastic and other aesthetic components this will require, as I don't want a bunch of ugly holes in the dash when it's over. Thanks for your time! |
Check out thedreamer's setup.

There is a good amount of room. My second design is based on the OEM navigation, it is basically a screen in the top and a HKS camp 2 somewhere so that all that is behind it is cables.

Here is design 1, it was stolen and was not nearly as good overall in design & quality.

theDreamer, any plans on something neat for the blank area left over by the keypad on the factory nav?

That spot is often called the "cubby hole" or just "cubby". Might help when you are searching.

I have thought about maybe doing something leather wrapped or possible a gauge (there is about 2-3" underneath it before the DD). I just don't think it would work with it reflecting onto the screen reading out the camp2. I just have not thought of anything that would be worthwhile installing in that spot I could use. Any suggestions are always welcomed. |
