Aero guys...talk to me about the Impul wing.
I have been struggling deciding on a wing, or diffuser I guess. I don't want a high wing. They are too much. But my impression is that diffusers are from a performance standpoint worthless and mini-whale tails just don't do it for me (although they perform).
So I was looking for something in the middle and finally found it but am now questioning myself. I was looking at the Impul wing but started to wonder if it was too low to get the downforce of a high wing and with the space between wing and hatch, wouldn't perform as well as beefed up diffuser. I plan on going FI in the spring and road tracking the car 4 times a year so I'd like to get 'some' help back there. Any thoughts? I'd also take suggestions on other options. Thanks.

Yes, yes it does in my opinion by far my favorite wing for the Z!
And OP they really don't make a "defuser" for our cars that actually works, guys correct me if I'm wrong but the FRP or CF ones they make are just covers for looks. Companies make them that work for the 350z but not the 370z, On to the wing there are a lot of choices to choose from, I my self stated what I like. Good luck and keep us all posted on what you choose. And don't forget to post pics...

It looks great with Amuse but I'm not sure with a Fujimura front and Nismo side and rear.

As far as 'working', it's just a guess. You'd have to put them in a wind tunnel to see for sure. There is so much going on before any air gets to the wing that the aero engineering has to be spot on. I figure for most wings it's about a 33% chance it hurts, 33% chance it helps and a 33% chance it does nothing. With aero, it's a lot easier to be wrong than to be right.
And remember that a wing vs. a spoiler accomplish different things- a spoiler is all about downforce where a wing is downforce + stability. Take a look at how the wings are set for qualifying at the Indy 500 - they actually tilt them back about 10* to take away downforce. But if they just took the wing off the car would be undriveable because you would lose the stability the wing provides. |

Not really. A spoiler doesn't provide downforce. A wing provides downforce, a spoiler disrupts the airflow behind the car to reduce turbulence or drag.

A spoiler will generate some downforce, it just isn't as clean/efficient as a wing. Just look to NASCAR for everything on spoilers. They took a lot of the downforce (and drag) away from the Cup cars by cutting the spoiler down quite a bit on the new cars.

OP, either go with one of the big APR wings that's high up enough to get into the airflow in the back of the car, use the Nismo wing, or the sport package spoiler. Whet you've posted is for looks, and may make the car's aero worse. At least you know Nissan tested the Nismo wing and the sport spoiler.

Some spoilers can function like a crude wing, though. That's kind of how the stock car spoilers/wings work. They aren't as efficient as a wing but the size and angle of the blade has an impact on the downforce they can generate. It doesn't look like it, but a stock car can generate around 2,000lbs of downforce at speed with the rear blade at a high angle. Obviously the shape of the body comes into play but that rear blade is doing something more than just reducing lift.
There's a reason why when, on a high speed track, a car passing closely on the outside can cause the inside car to spin out since the passing car can reduce the amount of clean air flowing to the inside car's spoiler... loss of rear downforce, loss of grip, loss of control. I think they are a little different than a typical street car spoiler.
