Rear Fog Light Heat
Just installed my Rear Fog Light from Z1 Motorsports, used their supplied wiring harness and instructions and everything went great. I hooked it up to my driving lights. I drove around for about and hour with my drivers lights on and when I got back home I felt the fog light outer plastic and it was very hot. It was to hot to keep my hand there. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this or not. Thanks

You can try a wire loom. If that’s not good enough try a wire heat sleeve like so Heat Protection Wire Sleeving, Heat Protection Wire Sleeving Products, Heat Protection Wire Sleeving Suppliers and Manufacturers at Alibaba.com. Or Google Wire Heat Protection. Something along that nature. I definitely recommend some sort of protection. What wire harness did you choose form Z1? How was the wire install where the instructions pretty easy to understand? Was all the hardware supplied? Does your fog light turn on with all the lights and stay on? Or on when breaks applied?

The light itself was hot, not the wiring.
OP, it probably won't be an issue, but if I was me I'd swap an LED.

Conventional bulbs get hot, especially ones that are constantly on. I wouldn't really worry about it, but like others have said, you can swap it out with an LED bulb.

There is a DIY mod somewhere
that shows how to take a dual filament bulb 25W / 5W and modify it to dim the light a bit, I believe that it is a 7443 bulb, basically you cut off the out side leads and move the inner leads over, did mind just to reduce the intensity.

I have the same rear fog from Z1 as well. I didn't need their harness as I went through the license plate wiring.
I did swap the original bulb for LED. Purchased it from Ebay. Just type in the original bulb type LED and whola. LED's run much cooler not to mention look so much better than bulb.

I put LED bulb from VLED and replaced the incandescent, wires were not hot, don't know if bulb was hot but I replaced because wire harness was not designed for additional 25W load on brake light. No one has ever had a problem but I feel better now. Not as bright but sufficient.

Well after taking out the bulb I can see why the fog light got so hot. Look at the size of the bulb! its also 12V 21W #7440. LED is probably the way to go, not sure if I'll have trouble with the reduced watts like other situations LED sometimes create, but its worth a shot, I really like the looks of the light at night. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Just buy a 7443 bulb, cut the outside leads off and move the inner leads over to that position. Someone else on the forum did a DIY on this (did a quick search and did not find it to reference) and it solved my issue of the bulb being too bright and too hot when used full time. Took all of 2 seconds though and if you had a 7443 bulb it would be apparent.
I had simply wired it to my license plate light so it was on whenever the lights were on. Jim |

How did you wire the rear fog lamp to your license plate light? Did you have to cut the wiring and splice the fog lamp to the license plate light? Thank you, spryor |

It's a......FOG light, of an increased intensity to the rear lights to prevent a rear end collision whilst driving in inclement weather, i.e. FOG. |
