License Back on front bumper

Is the license back on the front bumper (the unpainted strip thats above the fangs in the lower grill) removable? Or is it directly attached to the grill/bumper. I was thinking it might look cool painted body color. Has anyone tried this?

also if it can be removed it should allow more ram air to the intakes...
