Billet Emblems Revisited (with pics)

I poured over the old thread where the guy was going to machine billet emblems...then the thread died. I own a couple VMC's so I figured I'd give it a shot! These are my own cad models and my first rough pass. I just need to part it off and make another with a finer 3D pass. Let me know what you think

Cool, this is just me but i'd like it to be flat as possible.

speedfreek 04-10-2013 10:49 AM

Nice. In to see what the finished product looks like.

MyKindaGuise 04-10-2013 11:24 AM

SouthArk370Z 04-10-2013 03:03 PM

Nice job.

sub'd for final results!

roplusbee 04-13-2013 05:17 PM

One word...............Hot. Chalk me down when you get it ready for sale. Will you be offering front and rear replacements or just fronts? I can see these being powder coated or painted and opening up the door for some nice customization.

I actually like the angled edge in the middle of the Z. Looks great man, can't wait to see the finished product!

Looks good! You could also cut these from plate carbon fiber. I work in a machine shop, and in order to get the price down they would have to do a good ammount of these. A single one off piece could easily run you $150-$200 . If you wanted to get crazy, you could have them cut from titanium! That would be expensive!

dP3NGU1N 04-14-2013 02:51 AM

What software are you using? I'm a professional CAD designer and some of those surfaces look really blocky. I could take a look at it for you and make some adjustments if you'd like.

It could just be the resolution of the passes but I think those fillets are really large. just my 2 cents.

menzzer37 04-14-2013 07:23 PM

I'm an engineer and the CAD is fine, the CAM just needs refinement. A new block of billet is running now with 2 more tools and finer tool paths.

Titanium would be cool...but a 5" block would be insane cost wise. I'll update again when the new emblem comes off the machine.

Sub'd cant wait to see the finished hamburger....

Glambutang 04-15-2013 10:37 PM

Most 3D printer material is junk and won't hold up to the elements. That being said, there is DMLS which could be SS or Al, but it's pretty grainy.. and the machine is 300-400K for a good one.

Anyway.... updates:

Just needs polished out.

The only problem with that is if these are going on the outside of the car, some one is going to pull them off and take them home...then your out $200.

Digging it man!

Just a thought, but you know what might look cool? a little Japanese and US flag in the "Z" area. Not sure how hard that would be to do....just a thought. Or maybe on each side of the "Z"?

menzzer37 04-26-2013 07:46 PM

here are the machining stages and a final shot on the car (dirty and crappy pic). Bead blasted the flat areas, polished the contours

Not my taste. Looks off and odd with tow hook being a different color. Props for making it.

menzzer37 04-26-2013 08:34 PM

Looks not different than the factory one...

SouthArk370Z 04-26-2013 08:49 PM

Turned out very well. Only suggestions I have are a bit more polish and paint the background.

There is this thing called paint....

Looks great OP. Let me know when you plan on production. I definitely want one. I like the machined finished though. Maybe a fine finish on the background and a rougher finish on the Z
