Yikes! I got mine off by taping friction tape from my hockey sticks around the knob and broke the first strap wrench then got a heavy duty one and slowly but surely it came off all while holding with my left hand the shaft underneath...
Knob came of without a scratch... I'm rocking the Tommy Kaira hebi bebi shift knob

It is pretty tricky, there's just too much Locktite on there. Mine is in pieces and I even thought I was being careful with a cloth wrapped around the knob.

It's all about right tools for the right job. The cheap strap wrench finish would not even try to grip the knob, just slide (yes I know how to use one) Apparently i needed the magic BLUE strap wrench everyones using in the diys .As far as people saying they twisted it off with their hands and grips on the base, 100% not possible on mine (all I did overseas was lift weights lol). I have a hunch different vehicles have different amounts of loctite. I'm not at my house and didn't have the right tools haha. I didn't care about the oem shift knob regardless or I would have waited

I've done it twice on two separate Zs now and here's how you do it:
Get two pipe wrenches, a towel and a friend. Your shift knob will not survive this procedure. Take pipe wrench #1 and attach it to the knob wrap a towel around the shaft and attach wrench #2. Have your friend hold the shaft steady while you remove the shift knob. This is important because you don't want to torque the gearbox (really bad news). Knob will come off. I had one pop off with a little tearing leather and the other ripped completely in half through the aluminum threading.

Yeah I tried to get mine off by hand and then w/ a big pair of channel locks after wrapping w/ an inner tube to protect the knob. Waste of time and very frustrating. Like everyone said many times... that bugger is on good.. real good. Picked up a strap wrench from HDepot ($8) and used a big vise grip to steady the stick at the base. Easy peasy. The trick is in the ability to grip with the rubber strap of the wrench and having enough leverage to turn the knob w/o any slippage. Right tools for the job is imperative.

I think now I really f... Up!!!!! I was readjusting my Tommy Kaira, and after reinstall it, I felt it was very tight when screw in after I put a little bit of loctite, but just a little, and it was hard to get it back... I used a strap wrench, but i found out the shifter shaft was turning also with the knob, it was tight, but was turning when I was adjusting with the strap wrench...
The knob ended about 1/8" higher than when i first installed it. Anybody can help me and tell me if I damage the shifter????? If I will have any issues when shifting my car?????? Do I need to fix or change the shifter???????? __________________
