Default Tachometer noise

Hey guys,

My tachometer makes a noise when it does the sweep to start the car. The noise sounds like plastic gearing spinning. It only does it when you start the car when it goes from 0 to 7500RPM and back. It would also make that noise when I do it with the car in the on position but engine off. Once the car is running, no noise at all. Is that normal? My warranty is running out next weekend, I just want to get a few small issues taken care of.

Thanks

There are, indeed, plastic gears in the tach with very thin gear fluid. It is pretty simple in construction. There was a time when the tach shaft slipped out of one of the gears, and I was able to push it back in and reassemble. Alignment was done with the needle in place and pushing it counter-clockwise to slip it in the home position.

Of course, this is not possible with all cars like the Honda Prelude I worked on. Once the shaft slipped out, it was broke.

The thing is that it only makes the noise doing the initial sweep to the top or putting the car in on position, not when car is working. I don't remember if the car had that noise when new

Did you figure out the issue? Experiencing the exact same problem on a 2010 Z with <25k miles. Thanks and sorry I do realize this was 7 years ago.
