Anyone tried swapping out the shifter boot for a metal one?
1 Attachment(s)
I have tried reading through some threads and haven't quite found what I'm looking for. I was just curious if anyone has swapped out the leather boot for a metal shifter like some Ferraris have. I don't even know if it would look right in the 370.
Example picture attached. (I know the gears are not accurate, but the pic was just so you know what I was talking about) |
I've thought about it once or twice but never seriously researched the feasibility. I'll be interested to hear some other people's thoughts.

Personally I would prefer a boot :twocents: But :ugh2: for thinking outside the box.;)

also...imagine shifting with this. when you do a 2 > 3 shift, you tend to push to the upper right in one motion, with a metal gated shifter like this you'd have to shift up, then right, then up again. its not all that intuitive if you've actually driven one, which is why its not all that common. anyway, if you manage to do it, cheers to you, it'd look awesome at a show! |
Thanks for the opinions! I appreciate you helping me realize a few things

I love this look as well but our transmission mounts are too soft so gear positions are always slightly changing.

I have been thinking about something else similar such as what about a shift boot made from really fine titanium chain-mail like used in the later models of the Honda NSX.

That metal shifter idea sounds promising. If it could be done right, i would be interested in the results.

There was someone who did a custom gated shifter in a 350z that looked sick, he said he hated it and it was a bitch to drive though. I think he even went as far as to get rid of it.
Edit: NSX's are sick. |
