Hardwired my radar & GPS

Thank you to Pacific Star Line in Torrance Ca. for the install today. Took a few hours and the result is perfect as usual from these guys. They also did my window tint.

Now I don't have any messy wires hanging around and when I turn on the car, everything powers up via 12 volts! (I believe everything is connected to the back of the 12 volt plug. (I can still plug in a phone charger, etc. to the 12 volt source)

My V1..

My widescreen Magellan Meastro 5310(saved me what?.. $1,300 from the dealer?)

The best part is.. I can close it! What GPS unit?..
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2377/...bb04ba63_o.jpg

Completely removable if need be (bracket stays in place for easy clip in/out)..
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3562/...8fe3d441_o.jpg

Bracket mounted.. 3 screws and one hole for wire. The thing doesn't budge..
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2646/...6d03609c_o.jpg

The screen is just about as large as any OEM (but for much less $$)..

Both powered up and ready to go!..

The GPS sits nice and high in an otherwise useless cubby and is easily visible/usable and the door is no nuisance to have open while driving as it is relatively small.

Nice, I wish radar detectors were legal here!

GreenJalapeno 07-01-2009 02:44 AM

ahah they arent legal here in socal either. its just no cops really care.

AK370Z 07-01-2009 04:42 AM

Install looks nice and clean. Mine (RADAR) should be hardwired soon. I am debating right now if I should get the bracket like "MODSHACK" or no.

I have the bracket AK, it is very nice and get little to no vibration from the unit. Only time it vibrates is when something is moving at a very high frequency but I just barely touch the V1 and it stocks.

Great got Killerbee, only downside is the little door does not slide back at all. :(

JohnnyBgood 07-01-2009 10:04 AM

I have the bracket as well. Well worth it from a functionality and asthetics standpoint.

Yeah it would be kinda nice if the little door was on a set of rails so that you could slide it back once opened but it's not really that big of a deal because of it's smallish size.

I forgot to mention that the GPS unit has the external antenna attached but even without it, it gets full power (all four bars) from the satelites where it sits in the cubby.

Actually, radar detectors are legal in all states except Virgina and D.C.. It's the JAMMERS that are illegal.

Radar Detector Legal - Radar Detector Law

Just google it. There's a lot of sites that explain that.

Back on topic, that install looks great. Nice work.

They're legal everywhere except Washington DC & Virginia. It's radar/laser "jammers" that aren't legal anywhere.

AK, any idea the name of the bracket Modshack used? I see something called the Blendmount that is similar, but not the same. Any idea the thickness of the rearview mirror stalk?

KillerBee370 07-01-2009 10:25 AM

I looked at that bracketed install and like the way it looks as well as the sturdiness of it all but it sits the radar unit down too low for my taste. I wanted it sitting up higher and almost flush with the mirror.

Check this out from a Lexus forum:

This seems to be the Z-mount that AZ has in the photo:

>135I 07-01-2009 11:27 AM

That looks awesome. I hope they make that mirror for the 370Z.

Rans 07-01-2009 11:29 AM

The mirror is a one-off custom that the guy had done in a shop.

LiquidZ 07-01-2009 01:16 PM

I really need to hardwire my V1. Is it pretty easy to do? I am inept when it comes to anything electrical.

Valentine makes a kit that is easy to use, but if you are really inept as you say, are you sure you want to?

KillerBee370 07-01-2009 03:26 PM

That Lexus mirror is bad a$$!

These same guys make an adjustable pivot mount that would allow a more flush fitting up toward the mirror. I thought this was going to annoy me too, but surprisingly it doesn't and does not seem a distraction in right hand sweepers.... I've gotten used to it..

^^ A guy on the 350 fourm was making those. Proabably the same guy. He would etch the arrows and bands in the mirror. Pretty sweet.

If you are worried about cops, you can get the K40, I loved mine. It uses Bluthooth technology for all the sensors and you can put the display custom mounted where ever you want. That way it is less noticable when a cop pulls you over and also won't be a target at night lite up in the window.

Check out these mounts..

Awesome quality.

Supergoji 07-01-2009 11:59 PM

radar jammers are illegal everywhere. however laser jammers are legal in certain states. i know for a fact that laser jammers are legal in NY.

also will that bracket for the escort work with a Z32 mirror?

I would say a radar detector hardwire is the most I can do. Other than that I'm screwed.

FricFrac 07-02-2009 11:20 AM

Wow they did an amazing job on the mirror then they left a big hunk of wire flopping around instead of at least tying it to the mirror if not routing it through the mount itself...

He mentioned in his post that he had not finished the install and still had the wires to do, he was just showing off the facia.

Here is my BlendMount with V1. The height is adjustable and I adjusted V1 just below the rearview mirror. There is no vibration issue. The V1 is rock solid during driving.

Try the blendmount, I just got mine and it has a very high quality build, as well as the design, a lot of flexibility:

Zero,

You might as well go one step further and hot wire it into your mirror. Not very difficult.

You need one of these for your Valentine 1. These are outstanding mounts for that unit.

can you tell me how to set it?
