Default To those who have painted their roof, question.

So I'm getting my roof painted at a shop next week. I took it in for them to check out the roof. To make it a clean edge they are going to open the trunk while painting the back section, so they can get deeper down in the back seam for painting. The front is the front, not much to fuss about there.

My real question is the driver and passenger side. There is a rubber seal there. Their plan is to mask just barely over the seal to make the paint go into the rubber seal so you won't see any original paint color. Something about this doesn't seem right to me. If the rubber shrinks or something paint will become visible.

When you guys got your roof painted how did it go? Where did they mask? If you did the above, does it still look good after a long period of time.

I had my roof vinyl wrapped and the guy left the crack silver, my original car color on both sides. I think it looks good.

Can you post a close picture of the passenger or driver side where it meats the seal.

i would suggest having the shop remove the hatch, from what i understand it's not that difficult

as far as the sides, is it possible at all to get under the stripping with some kind of tool and pull it back a bit so that the paint can get under it? Can't really remember how pliable it is offhand

Oh that looks a little off. I have my roof with glossy vinyl but I made sure the vinyl covered through the inside of the rubber seal.

Furthermore, you can easily remove that upper portion, it just pops open so you can paint through it.

Can you be more specific. What is the "upper portion".

The portion above the "lower portion".

LOL the upper portion of the door window frame. aka the sides of the roof if viewed by front or back of the z.

these pop open which gives you access to the frame to allow you to paint all the way through the rubber seal or in my case apply vinyl inside the rubber seal for that OEM look.

Hmm, is there a DIY on this because this would be preferable for obvious reasons.

please have them remove the "A-pillars" and hatch before paint. Also have them mask off the front wind shield. This is a relatively easy job.

also don't be cheap. have them remove the weather stripping between the sides and top and replace it after painting. Do it right, or not at all.

After talking to you guys I think I will find a better place to have it painted. Someone who knows what they are doing. I would think a decent place would have suggested that to begin with. The only reason I'm going to someone else is I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to painting lol.

The problem is that these guys might be the best madison has to offer. This city is like the black hole of car services. I might have to branch out and find someone in chicago or milwaukee.
