OEM Nav A/C question

Hey guys, I have a 2009 with factory nav (not sure if it makes a difference), but when I turn the air recycle button, the A/C ALWAYS turns on...
If I turn the A/C off the recycle turn off...
I could have sworn I used to be able to use recycle without A/C

Can anyone else confirm if their system is the same???

Thanks! :tiphat:

The recirculate button is also known as MAX A/C... recirculates air from the cabin thru the condensor and A/C system... normal operation.

I do not fully comprehend my system either. I am always fooling around with the A/C on a trip. The little light that comes on is blocked from my seating position.

I usually turn it on just to verify then turn it off.

Good luck.

Yeah, but sometimes I just want the already cold air in the car to recirculate without putting more stress on the engine lets say during a "mountain run"

Yeah, that light was an afterthought, at night I can usually get away with putting my finger in front of the light and seeing that it's on... During the day, that trick doesn't work so well...

I believe that our cars turn off A/C at WOT throttle anyway.... I leave mine on and don't notice a performance loss at all.

Now that you mention it, I have heard of that...
In any case, I'm wondering if my settings are screwed or what happened... Or if all 370Z's are set up this way

wheee! 09-24-2012 04:13 PM

Nope... yours is the same as everyone's... recirc'd air goes thru the A/C system.

Push in the left A/C knob to turn on/off

... I know that... :shakes head:
It's just that once you click recirculate the A/C turn on, if you push the A/C on/off button, the recirculate turns off...

I think this is a 'safety' feature so the windows don't fog up. Recirculating the interior air can make the air fairly humid, so the A/C is set to automatically come on with recirc, essentially as a dehumidifier.

I agree, even with auto controls, I still like fully manual functionality.

Can I ask, though, why do you want recirc on without A/C?

Kinda makes sense

Sometimes it'll just get too cold, and I just want to turn the A/C off (I have TP's so it smells like crap at a light or something) Or if I know I am going to temporarily push it, I'll turn the A/C off (sometimes not at WOT)
I know there is a temperature setting too, lol... I use freeze my *** off or the death hot setting, nothing in between, lol

Well, too bad, Nissan has made that decision for you... :p

weird... pretty sure it still recirculates on mine??? I'll check tomorrow

EDIT: in fact I'm positive my fans keep blowing, I specifically did this just today. It was cool outside and wanted the ac off with fans blowing. pushed the button to turn off ac and fans were still blowing

But was your recirculate still on?

hmmm not sure lol :p I 'm guessing prob not

Just to clarify, I checked this out on my Z this evening.

Turning on recirc automatically turns on the A/C; turning off the A/C turns recirc off.

I think their main concern was someone heating the car in winter with recirc on; given how small the cabin is, it could fog up quickly. By forcing the A/C to run, it keeps the air from getting too humid.

Ok, I think I have the same issues as you. It's been an issue for awhile now but hasn't bothered me too much because of the extreme summer heat. When it starts to cool down a bit, I won't be using A/C because I'll freeze to death or close to it. In this temperature, I would want to only use the Normal cool air without A/C. The problem with this is that the normal cool air smells stinky. I'm not sure why and yes, I've changed my air cabin filter many times and there are no socks in there. This smell sometimes go through normal A/C for a very short amount of time. As soon as I hit the recirculate button, I get fresh smelling air. So the reason why I would want to recirculate normal air is to get rid of that nasty normal cool air smell. The bad smell doesn't come on for Recirculation A/C or hot temperature, but for normal air get ready to sniff up that nasty smell.

There is a trick to this but it doesn't seem to do much. If you hit the "OFF" button then hit "Recirculate," the light will turn on but there will be no air.

This is completely normal, I have the same settings in my 350z

I got kinda lost in what you wrote, my bad... But yeah, if you turn the system off and hit recycle you just get NO airflow, I just want to use recycle without the A/C being forced to turn on...
(Lets just say for shitz n giggles) That I want my car to be a billion degrees, so I want the heater on, FULL BLAST and recirculate to get it even hotter, why is the damn A/C being forced on? (And yes, I have heard the A/C clutch pump thing engaging...)
Better example, I'm traveling up the 5 from LA going to SF, (anyone who has been on this drive knows there are several places that smell like SHITE), but lets say I like the temperature of the car and I just like the air blowing (my air is on 100% of the time) so I click recycle, why does the A/C have to be on???

Again, I could've sworn my car's setup wasn't like this... But I'm just checking...

wheee! 09-25-2012 07:19 AM

Keep in mind your A/C is an air "conditioner", meaning it is more than a cooling system. it is a dehumidifier as well.... this means that you can use your A/C with the temp setting at a warm or hot temperature and it will act as a dehumidifier to keep your cabin free of condensation.
If all your concerned about is loss of performance due to the pump being run... turn off all your accessories then.... You can't have it both ways! lol
