To those who replaced their shift knobs...
I just switched out my stock manual knob for the Password JDM one, but everyone's new knobs look like they sit perfectly with the boot, almost as if they were stock. I don't know if it's the PWJDM one or not, but it's not wide enough to cover the entire stock O-ring (the black piece of plastic that keeps the boot up and top together). Are people getting rid of it or am I missing something? Maybe wire tie the boot ends to the shifter itself? Also, the PWJDM came with that black rubber ring, which I don't know if that sits IN the knob collar or underneath the boot itself.
Can someone help me out here?

I received a rubber ring with my Nismo shift knob that you place over the boot just before you put the new knob on and it tapers a little bit to be even w/ the boot on the bottom and flush with the knob on the top.

I actually just got one of the blue PWJDM knobs about a month ago. Installed it without any issues. Mine sits/fits perfectly so you actually shouldn't need to use any loctite at all.
It was late at night and my memory's a little fuzzy but.. if I remember correctly, the little black ring was held in place by a wire tie. I had to cut the tie to lower the ring to get the stock shifter off properly. Then after the stock shifter was off, I raised the ring a little bit higher than it was before and I tied it back the same way. Luckily the boot had some extra slack at the top and when I lifted the ring a little higher, it also become a little more narrow, so it was a good fit with the smaller PWJDM base. The thing that came with the shifter goes inside the knob (nothing goes underneath the black ring). The little washer that was inside your stock shifter though.. you should leave that out. I thought it helped the shifter sit on the threads so I kept it in there, but it will rattle around and make noise. I took it back out and it's been perfect since. |

Well, I ended up looking to do that soda bottle fix, but my dad had other ideas. We ended up getting a bigger rubber ring (like the one that came with the knob) and replaced the black plastic piece with that. Because it was smaller, once the leather was in it and it was around the shifter base, it was snug and I got it tucked up underneath the knob.
Who knew you'd need a damn instruction set for this thing? On my Si, I just screwed the knob off myself, took the boot off the same way, did a little wire tie around the base and the boot rested on it, then put the new knob back on. It was easy as cake. This was a pain in the ***.
