cruise control on dash blinking?!?

so the weirdest thing happened to me yesterday while i was driving..... all of a sudden my cruise control light starts flashing outa no where... i press the button try and off it and it just keeps blinking.... everything was normal on the gauges... so i just drive home like regular... trying to figure wtf is going again... i floor it.. the power is there, nothing was different...

so i get home park it... turn it off and then wait like 30 secs, start it again and its STILL blinking, so i make up my mind to move out my cars to the front so i can park my z under the garage to work on it and by the time i start my car it was at least 10 mins the light magically stopped blinking?!? i press the buttons on the steering wheel to make it blink and it doesnt do it... everything works.. i could ON and OFF the light with the button.... so my question is wat the heck was going on? should i be worried? :shakes head:

cheshirecat 06-20-2012 04:21 PM

this is from the 350z manual with the HR engine

When the ECM detects any of the following conditions, the ECM will cancel the cruise operation and inform the driver by blinking indicator lamp.
Engine coolant temperature is slightly higher than the normal operating temperature, CRUISE lamp may blink slowly.
When the engine coolant temperature decreases to the normal operating temperature, CRUISE lamp will stop blinking and the cruise operation will be able to work by pressing SET/COAST switch or RESUME/ACCELERATE switch.
Malfunction for some self-diagnoses regarding ASCD control: SET lamp will blink quickly.

thanks bro... it was flashing pretty quickly.... what is a ASCD control?

cheshirecat 06-20-2012 04:59 PM

I'm not sure- I wasn't able to find much about it. Very weird.

MattP725 06-20-2012 05:44 PM

Shot in the dark but probably an anti-skid/stability control of some sort. That's odd.

gy954 06-20-2012 06:03 PM

ASCD = Automatic Speed Control Device

To add to Cheshirecat's information, ASCD = Automatic Speed Control Device, which folks like us call "cruise control". Details in the Service Manual, EC-77:

"Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) allows a driver to keep vehicle at predetermined constant speed without depressing accelerator pedal."

simota1 06-20-2012 06:44 PM

^^^ thanks bro..... if its broken... it wont harm my car right? cruise control isnt even needed on this island LOL.... you could probably engage it for like 20 secs before either A. the traffic stops you B. you run into a stop light.... lol so its pretty useless... im just worried its gonna tie into some other stupid problem....

MattP725 06-20-2012 07:26 PM

No its totally standalone.

Not sure if this is related, but when I had cruise control problems, wouldnt engage, flashing cruise and limit indicators, it turned out to be a probloem with one of the wires in the steering column harness. I got it changed under warrenty and the problem has never come back since.

Hope that helps

robones 08-27-2012 08:05 AM

I hear you bro... :( a flashing LED light on the dash will kill me! I would not be able to keep my eyes off it

theDreamer 08-27-2012 08:10 AM

This is from our manual.

Quote:

PRECAUTIONS ON CRUISE CONTROL
. If the cruise control system malfunctions, it
will cancel automatically. The CRUISE indicator light on the meter panel will then
blink to warn the driver.
. If the engine coolant temperature becomes
excessively high, the cruise control system
will cancel automatically.
. If the CRUISE indicator light blinks, turn the
cruise control main switch off and have the
system checked by a NISSAN dealer.
. The CRUISE indicator light may blink when
the cruise control main switch is turned ON
while pushing the RESUME/ACCELERATE,
SET/COAST or CANCEL switch. To properly set the cruise control system, perform
the following procedures

simota1 08-27-2012 08:25 AM

hey dreamer... thanks... the coolant temps are normal... i even try to get it hotter by rev matching the crap outa the motor and flooring it on corners... water temps are norm so are my oil temps.. no bueno man

wen i try and cancel the stupid cruise control when its blinking like a maniac... it wont let me...

and i dont really wanna take it back to the dealer because of a mishap i had with them... last time i went there for a hesistation issue they said i had to overhaul my motor... wtf!?! because of my bolt ons... morons....:shakes head: when in fact all the things they told me like 3 of my coil packs are fried etc, etc... lol i even asked the service advisor... so... your saying my coil packs are pretty much fried and so are my plugs... but my car still idles smoothly? he says correct!!! you need a upper overhaul that would cost 2k.... i still shake my head at that incident...

what frustrates me more is that its intermittent... sometimes itll blink outa no where and sometimes it wont bother me for a long time....

simota1 09-25-2012 03:06 AM

bump... happening all the damn time now :( and it irritates me more than anything in the world...

Lunar-Eclipse 11-21-2013 08:33 PM

I know I'm bringing this thread back from the dead but I thought this might help some of the people having this problem.

I was having the same problem as Simota. A few months ago my cruise control light started flashing rapidly (usually after I made a turn). I would turn the car off/on and it would go away for a while. Then it started happening more and more frequently. First it was once a month, then a couple times a month, then a couple times a week, then everyday.

Long story short, I showed it to the dealer and they replaced my ECM under the 8 year/80,000 mile electrical component warranty. All I had to pay was for 1 hour of diagnostic time.

Since I am past my 3 year/30,000 mile warranty and have no extended warranty I figured it would not be covered. I've never been so happy to be wrong.

So if you have this problem take it to a dealer and see if they'll cover it.

AlexRaymond19 08-05-2014 07:07 PM

I left mine running in the driveway, it was blinking when I came back...

Austonian 05-28-2015 08:18 AM

Did OP ever get this issue fixed?

Lunar-Eclipse 05-28-2015 01:58 PM

I'm not the OP but a few months after Nissan replaced my ECM I started getting the damn blinking light again. After much troubleshooting I figured out the problem was the contacts on the clutch safety switch. I cleaned them as a temporary fix but I ultimately replaced the switch. It was a whole $16 from the dealer. That was a year ago. No blinking light since.

I'm having this problem also, were exactly are those contacts on the clutch safety switch? Pics? :tiphat:

Lunar-Eclipse 07-27-2015 10:59 PM

The contacts are in the safety switch. I don't have pictures and I tossed the bad switch long ago. But I did find pictures of a 350z safety switch. It looks the same as the 370z switch. Be careful opening it, the tabs are very fragile. I broke one while taking it apart. Glued it back on. Once apart I used some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to clean the contacts.

Thanks man!! :tiphat:

Mr Chow 12-03-2016 02:29 PM

6 weeks ago the cruise control light would flash randomly. Thanks to this thread I did not worry. Took it into the dealer yesterday. The repair tech wrote he ran "data monitor" which found the ASCD switch defective. He replaced the Switch Assy-ASCD p/n 25300-62J0E located on the brake pedal, retested and the switch is working properly. Keeping my fingers crossed. If the cruise light doesn't flash in a couple weeks all is good.
Thank you to OP.

Gungrave 05-10-2020 12:34 PM

I know I’m bumping an old thread, but we’re any of you guys able to confirm the issue with this? My cruise control light started blinking the other day out of nowhere and I have no clue why. I’ll be driving the car probably later today to see if it does it again and I’ll be checking for scans and monitor the coolant temperature, but also wanted to make sure if you guys knew what the actual problem was.

Tractionless 05-10-2020 02:11 PM

Mine stopped blinking after replacing the brake pedal switch (7AT) as mentioned above.

Do you remember the part number for the switch?

Lunar-Eclipse 05-10-2020 09:25 PM

Damn that was in 2015? My Z's getting old. :driving:
But I'm happy to report that I have not seen a blinking cruise control light since replacing the switch.

This looks about right. But of course I suggest you stick your phone above the pedal in your car and take a picture to get the part number.

Gungrave 06-07-2020 11:09 AM

So just a heads up for anyone else that has this problem and ends up looking for the switches. Apparently there's actually four different switches total. Two on the brake and two on the clutch. My guess in my case it's the ASCD, but just to be on the safe side; I ordered all four. These are the switches:

25300-62J0E - ASCD switch (one goes on the clutch & one goes on the brake so 2 total)
25320-JN00A - Stop light switch (goes on the brake for stop light)
25325-D400E - Clutch pedal position (goes on the clutch)

cman227 06-07-2020 01:28 PM

This is now happening on my 2014 Z with 68K miles on it. Starts blinking, shut the engine off and restart and it goes away.
