CF Roof Interest
Well we just paid to become the newest sponsor of the370z.com and we cant wait to get our title as sponsors! So I thought Id go ahead and get a head start on a head count on who would like carbon fiber roofs.
Just a quick intro. The name of the company is Spawn Aerodynamics (Spawn for short) (website coming soon) and we are a small company based out of Chicago. We already have a member that’s local that offered to come by our shop to check us out and even talk about creating some molds to start products asap! Our carbon fiber is some of the best carbon fiber materials available. And we don’t use cheap polyester resins. We use the best resins we can find which is a clear super strong epoxy system that we purchase locally. All of our products (even fiberglass products) are either vacuum bagged or vacuum infused and bagged. That offers the best quality available since it gives you a perfect resin to material ratio, which results in strong, light, thin, long lasting parts. We also clear coat every product in UV resistant Dupont automotive clear. Our cost is about 250 - 300 a gallon so its good clear. Long story short we put our time into making flawless products, we guarantee all of our products for quality and satisfaction. And we try our hardest to offer great customer service. Also basically... If you can dream it we can build it. We take pride in our fabrications. (Specify if you want overlay or direct replacement) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. If I can get at least 3 - 5 people interested then I will have a local member come by so we can create the mold. Sorry for typing so much! UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Well as you all know we have been working hard to make the best carbon fiber roof overlay available and here we go the prototype! Its made of 1 layer of 2x2 carbon fiber 5.7 oz and 1 layer of 1.5 oz matting. It weighs less than a few lbs and believe it or not sits flush! Check it out for yourself! Sorry for no finished pictures. I just pulled it from the mold a few min ago (10 30 PM) And thought Id show you guys! This is how it fits snug underneath the side A pillars (the pillars that stretch from the fenders to the quarter glass, and yes they do come off) Since they fit underneath it makes it look like its not an overlay. This is showing how flush it is with the sides. It actually site a tad lower so it looks even better! This is the over all untrimmed look. Also keep in mind it looks that way only because its not wetsanded and clear coated yet. The MSRP Is $625.00 but we are letting the first few go for only $500. We are only taking one or two orders at the time at most so we dont get backed up with work. No over ordering, no overdue jobs, no falling behind, no angry customers Last edited by SpawnAeroJohn; 07-04-2009 at 01:08 AM. |

As a muscle car guy, I'm not too familiar with replacing body components with CF. That being said, I have a dumb question:
If you replace your roof with CF, are you cutting out the original roof? |

+it will look amazing, +its always reversible, +its cheaper +and for those of you who want to reduce weight I would not worry about this adding weight, it will only add on a few lbs. I’ve done my research for you guys P.S I will make a few more GI threads to give you great folks more options. |

I don't want to start a big debate, but since the OP was looking for opinions (i believe), I would like to say that overlays are ricers who own things like hondas. Don't be lame adding stuff that doesn't do anything for your car. You may as well throw a wing on the car too.
Now, direct replacement, that's a different story. Depending on the weight savings, that could be slick. |

The direct replacement is def an option since we have every capability of doing it but keep in mind that the panel will cost around 900. Not only that the panel will be as strong or stronger than the OEM one for safety purpouses, and will be lighter. Then to have the old roof removed and have the new one installed can cost around 500 or even more depending on where you go to have it installed. The roof is welded on all 4 sides. The hatch, head liner, windshield, and other components would have to be removed as well.
Im sorry to keep saying it but I dont want to be one of those companies that sells you something, and then when you get the product you find out that you now have to spend a whole lot more installing it. |
