help with shift knob?

So i finally installed my shift knob. My new shift knob is the nismo carbon fiber one. However i just have one quick question. Did you guys leave this thing

My new shift knob is the nismo carbon fiber one. However i just have one quick question. Did you guys leave this thing on or off? this silver ring thingy? Like i left mine off but now that i think back i dont think it would have made a difference. anyone know what it is used for? thanks for the help guys =)
