Is undercoating really needed on the Z? I searched but no definitive opinions so please weigh in.

If you are refering to the road debris noise from your rear wheel wells, then most of us are using Dynamat in the hatch area to remedy it.
Cabin noise

Gotcha! I'm sorry I can't be of much help there. Many owners seem to put the 370 away in the winter, but there are a few die hards out there. I have not read a thread with talk of undercoating that I can recall. Most people are dead set against adding weight!

I am one of those diehards, but not by choice. Undercoating will help IF it's done right. I've done my own over the years, saving money and ensuring it's done to my satisfaction.
Do not expect undercoating to quiet the Z. But it will help in protecting from road salt, sand and dirt. Just be sure you clean and dry before you apply, as with most other products. |

Most modern cars have a fixed lining in the wheel wells, it's designed to breathe and allow moisture to escape, it's sort of a soft nylon snap in liner that absorbs the gravel/sand noise that would hit the wheel wells and cause cabin noise.
Unfortunately, in the Z rear wheel wells, Nissan decided to forego spending 50 cents to stop the noise in our cabins. Adding anything other than that I feel won't alleviate the problem. In my Z I added Dynamat-like soundproofing throughout the rear cabin, but on the passenger side of the vehicle the inside surface of the rear fender isn't accessible, (due to gas line passage) and it rings like a drum when rocks and gravel hit it. |

if it's your dd, keep the car outdoors after you drive. let it cool down and freeze.
dry salt doesnt do much harm. but melted snow/ice (from garages/heated garages) combined with salt = i speak from experience. best way to keep your Z clean in the winter is hibernation. as for additional undercoating, dont bother. just go under the car every spring and wash the undercarriage very well, and wire brush the surface rust off, clean, and just spray some rustolium in the affected areas. |
