I remember reading in the other thread that due to the silver stitching used, certain red dyes may look maroon or darker than red. Maybe the orange base is to try to counter that?

I still cannot figure out why you need the orange...
Very top red one is just the red dye pen, the red on the very bottom has the orange pen with the red.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When I did mine with just red it came out more maroon, my trim looked more silver than white. I did the orange first and then applied the red and found out it left a brighter red.
