Steering Lock Elimination

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but my '11 was manufactured in June, 2011. There is no steering lock mechanism at all. With the front end lifted, the wheels turn freely. This might be a pain when I try to remove lug bolts to install spacers.

Uh, RWD...

can you turn the steering L/R by hand using the tires? That's the question were asking.

Yeah, sorry if I wasn't clear about that. Of course the wheels spin, but they also turn, as in no steering lock mechanism at all.

That's interesting. So instead of fixing the steering lock mechanism, Nissan just eliminated the anti theft feature....

unless the car has electronic parking brakes as security measure, yep.

So this thing can obviously be by passed. Whether or not the models with the steering lock can is the question.

it's not a bypass if it didn't exist from the beginning.

and yah, that question was raised about a month or so ago with no solutions yet.

I understand it's not a bypass on the newer models lol. I'm talking about some how bypassing on the earlier ones.

Most likely on the new ones they basically removed the part and de-programmed support for it in the BCM and IPDM units. For the old ones we'd still need some kind of "fake" module that acts like the steering lock unit to fool the BCM (well, or just disable NATS completely via UpRev, but that's not really an option unless it's a trailered race-only car).

That would be my guess as well. I wonder how "smart" the steering lock is...

Some basic research on that was done in kenchan's thread, e.g. see this post and the next few pages of discussion after it: DIY: Replace dreaded steering-lock on 2009s and early 2010s.

I was looking to see if the BCM was updated at the same time (03/11) and sure enough, it was. Actually it's interesting to see how many BCM part numbers there are:

10/08 - 10/09 284B1-1EA0A
10/09 - 03/10 284B1-1EA0B
03/10 - 07/10 284B1-1ET0B
07/10 - 01/11 284B1-1ET4B
01/11 - 03/11 284B1-1ET6C
03/11 - 09/11 284B1-1EA5D
09/11 - now 284B1-1EA7D

The IPDM module changed a bunch too, but not at 03/11, so my guess would be the BCM is what got changed to not look for the steering lock...
