Weighted Shift Knob Installed

3 Attachment(s)
I installed a TWM weighted shift knob from Canada, it's made a huge difference in shifting quality. This thing weighs 1.32 pounds! and is a bit shorter then the stock set up. I was running the Nismo one previously, which IMO is way too light, I use to mis-shift 1st to 2nd b/c of the effort it took to move it. Now I have no problems. I will upgrade to a short throw shifter later on, but I'm pretty satisfied for now. This would be a great edition to a short throw shifter. The model I got was the Desert Eagle & the color Is gun blue finish, which is actually more of a satin black.

why so much damage on the stock knob?

Look through some other posts about changing out your shift knob. All of them look like this when they remove it because they put so much damn locktite on the OEM shift knob that you have to just grab hold with a wrench or vice-grips and give it your all.

Yup...Pretty much count on trashing the stock knob to get it off...

Yep, after many attempts with a radiator hose and vice grips, that's what I did :tiphat: and even then, it was still hard to unthread. Just make sure that you have someone help you so that you can hold the shaft with another set of vice grips.
You will be putting a lot of torque on it and don't want that transmitting through the stick down to the tranny.

Thanks for the info...just what I'm looking for now!

There's probably no way on earth to remove the stock shift knob without damaging it, and it sucks because there is people around interested on buying it. I tried socks, shirt, a rubber strap, etc. and still the shiftknob looks all beaten up. But at the end, it makes you feel even better about your new shift knob, not matter how much you payed for it. :tiphat:

I want to reuse the stock knob with my short throw. :(

Good Luck, very slim chance you can get it off without damaging it :tiphat:

m4a1mustang 05-31-2009 08:49 PM

That really sucks. I might have to see if I can get a factory replacement then before I do the install. I don't like the feel of metal shifters. :(

m4a1mustang 06-01-2009 09:29 PM

Screw it. Decided I hate the stock knob.

How hot does that thing get?

CBRich 06-01-2009 10:11 PM

Someone in another thread stated that they were going to remove the shifter with their bare hands. I hope he posts a video.

SoCal 370Z 06-01-2009 10:13 PM

I gotta tell ya, the pit bull mauled version does have some appeal. :ugh2:

That was me. I already said no video because it would likely capture something embarrassing.

I'm sure I'm going to end up mauling it, so that's why I'm trying to order a new knob before I attempt an install. I think I'm going to go for a Voodoo Pearl knob like the one Modshack posted in another thread.

I need to order soon so I can have everything for this weekend.

I heard stories like this with the 350 as well, funny thing is, mine (the 350), came right off easily, haven't tried to remove this one though.

The aftermarket shift knob companies don't want to pay Nissan royalties...it's the economy.

Another one bites the dust. m4a1mustang has given up on the stock knob already. Who will be the first person to remove the stock knob without destroying it? The honor is still up for grabs.

That is my goal when I get my B&M shifter in this week, though I will have to wait for my new shift knob to arrive since I need that to drive. ;)

I'm still going to try, but I have decided that I would prefer a different knob.

How does the TWM knob feel in your hand? is it comfortable like the round shift knobs usually are? I am very interested in this exact shift knob but don't want to regret it after?

CBRich 10-04-2010 06:19 AM

Thread Revival. I'm so glad you brought this therad back up. I'd like to report that I was able to remove the stock knob with bare hands. You just need the right grip.

kenchan 10-04-2010 07:19 AM

Hope you held the shifter shaft with vicegrips.

CBRich 10-04-2010 07:40 AM

Definitely. Get big enough vice grips, latch 'em on, and let the center console do all the holding.

ClemsonWill 10-04-2010 10:47 AM

I'm glad to hear this can be done. I was thinking about a new shift knob but I definitely don't want to destroy the stock one.
