Well my car won't start, key reader warning is on...

...smart key system failure! Waiting on a tow!! Never thought I would be dealing with this!!

Anyone else have this issue??? :shakes head:

shadoquad 02-22-2012 05:35 PM

That sucks, Kev!

quagmire87 02-22-2012 06:20 PM

Damn another one!!! The dealership should give you a rental like they have done to so many others good luck buddy!

SPOHN 02-22-2012 06:31 PM

Is it the steering lock?

Jasonle 02-22-2012 06:36 PM

Damn another steering wheel lock.... Good luck man!

ZCarMan 02-22-2012 07:43 PM

Kev, sorry to hear of the problem. If its the steering lock then its been happening to many with 2009 and early 2010s with certain early model steering lock mechanisms. Make sure to contact Nissan North America and bitch at them and submit a note to the NHTSA. I'm waiting for it to happen to me any time now.

Baer383 02-22-2012 07:45 PM

It's pretty easy to install. Look in the DIY section for this.

the part # you want is 48700-JF00D.

You can put it in 5 minutes but the part is on restricted order plus it's like $500:ugh2:

I have a "C" lock that came out of my car still working but I don't know if I want to sell it.

kenchan 02-22-2012 08:06 PM

baer- definitely keep it in your trunk until you're completely done with your Z. :) there's no guarantee that D is 100% error proof.

I kind of wasn't worried about it b/c that one guy opened his and got it working again.

Mt Tam I am 02-23-2012 10:39 AM

How many miles on your Z? I am still waiting on my failure.

Nick911sc 02-23-2012 10:46 AM

These threads keep scaring me so much... I'd like to pretend it's not going to happen to me...

how i'm handling it! lol :ughdance:

flashburn 02-23-2012 11:37 AM

I'm at 42,000 miles now, expecting it to happen any day now at this rate. :(

happytheman 02-23-2012 12:36 PM

Damn Kev, I'm sorry to hear that your Z is another in the ever-increasing list of Z's that are being taken out by this part. I'm hoping for a recall.

It's so unfortunate, but quite likely you will be waiting a minimum of two to four weeks.

Mr. Onzedge, how long did yours take to get replaced?

It took about 2 1/2 weeks. Waiting for the part accounted for almost all of the lead time.

flashburn 02-23-2012 01:16 PM

Wow, that is an insane amount of time to wait. I'm guessing since I'm out of warranty, I'd be up ***** creek as far as getting a loaner car from Nissan too.

Maybe the part availability has improved. R and R on the part takes all of 10 minutes.

kevr6 02-23-2012 01:37 PM

My mileage is 42k and I have the part onroute for later today arrival!! I will install tomorrow!! If that doesn't solve the issue then I'll be forced to tow to Nissan down the road from me!!
Props to R.Mayer towing!! They have a bending flat bed and they hooked my car this morning and brought it over to the dealership lot where I work which is gated!! Ask for Jodie, he knows lowered vehicles and was extremely careful!!

flashburn 02-23-2012 01:40 PM

I guess I'm just going to hold out hope that this turns into an actual recall soon since the part is "restricted" right now. If nothing happens in the next month or so, I'll probably just try to get the part myself. Ridiculous.

Spikuh 02-23-2012 01:43 PM

I think I may just go ahead and replace mine before I get stuck on the road somewhere. I can't stand the idea of an unnecessary tow. :shakes head:

flashburn 02-23-2012 01:45 PM

Wish the part wasn't so ******* ridiculously expensive though. Isn't it ~$450?

Super Red Z 02-23-2012 01:55 PM

I happened to me last week. I have 36300 miles on miles. But after one hours I went back to my house to get a spare key, it works normal.I almost tow my car. That suck.

SPOHN 02-23-2012 01:55 PM

Id like to find out if you can bypass this unit? Requardless of a bad bunch one day all these units will fail.

I do not think this is possible.

Nick911sc 02-23-2012 02:21 PM

I noticed in the DIY thread someone took apart the unit and was able to fix it. So if that's the case... Is it possible to take the unit apart and modify it to always be in the open position? Taking away the possibility for failure... Not sure if that would require alteration to electronics as well

kevr6 02-23-2012 02:30 PM

Just got the part put on my desk!! The letter "D"!! $ 536.24 since I rush ordered it same day!!

I'm not sure but I believe these things operate in a open closed format. When car is off it closes and when you start it opens. But if it doesn't open it won't start

marcosking 02-23-2012 02:50 PM

I had this happen two weeks ago. I had to have it towed from my work parking lot. I had it towed on Thursday, the dealership ordered the part on Friday. Nissan sent the part over night by Saturday morning. I picked up my Z Saturday afternoon. Everything, including the rental, minus the tow was covered under warranty. I'm at 31,500 miles.

SPOHN 02-23-2012 02:57 PM

So where the hell is the recall. Damn Nissan. They recall a lot less minor things then this.

Especially since they issued a recall for the same part in the GTR.

Nick911sc 02-23-2012 03:14 PM

Is there any statute showing that a company that performs a recall but neglects to perform the same recall on a different model showing the exact problems should be forced to enact said recall?

I was ok living with all the other problems my Z might have.. But this pushes me a little too far in terms of wanting to keep the car long term (Or much longer in the short term).

kevr6 02-23-2012 04:03 PM

I'm sure it will happen and when it does I will submit for reimbursement!! I haven't called Nissan yet but plan on doing that anyway!!

Not that I am aware of. Nissan won't do a damn thing until they get bad press over it.

The reason they acted on the GTR so quickly was because it's their flagship car, and the owners surely would raise a stink and make them look bad. They probably don't think the same could happen with the 370. They just quietly got rid of it on the 2012+ I believe.
