The reason they acted on the GTR so quickly was because it's their flagship car, and the owners surely would raise a stink and make them look bad. They probably don't think the same could happen with the 370. They just quietly got rid of it on the 2012+ I believe.

So let's make some bad press :stirthepot:

Is there any way you can get reimbursed for the towing expense via warranty? I'm a newb when it comes to using the warranty for anything. Plus my work is about 30-40 minutes away from the Nissan dealer and I have a feeling it wouldn't be cheap to tow.

flashburn 02-23-2012 07:49 PM

Maybe someone should send these threads and some info to Jalopnik? They'd probably do a writeup about it. I'd do it, but I'm lazy. :shakes head:

IPDM and Steering Lock

Been there...done that. In December the IPDM failed and just last week the steering lock. At least I got it to dealer before it had to be towed. Pretty good for 8000 miles!

sonic370 02-23-2012 08:37 PM

sorry to hear about that. this thing is spreading like the flu............

makes me glad i just bought the extended warranty for 1050.00
sounds like thats at least half the cost to get it fixed..............

mantella87 02-23-2012 08:42 PM

Haven't seen this happen to a 2011 model...

I think it's only been on 2009 and early 210 models.

Yeah that seems to be the trend (from my amount of reading). I will say it is disappointing to see what would otherwise be perfectly good cars are put on a tow truck for something like this.

happytheman 02-23-2012 09:40 PM

Nissan must be stepping up the production on these, because it would seem that the wait time is drastically decreased!

They must be anticipating massive failure to this part of their vehicles... Hopefully since they're upping production that means there might be a recall?

I'm curious, do infiniti G37's also have this same part? MY gf's G37 has been having random problems where the car won't start and a battery warning is on the dash (I've never been there when it happens), but then after awhile it starts.

Mike 02-24-2012 08:27 AM

Everyone who has had the problem, remember to register your complaint with the NHTSA. Its the only way we are going to get a recall.

i am pretty sure the steering lock was the fault both times. dealers sometimes can not diagnose the problem correctly and replace the IPDM, but it's really the intermittent steering lock.

Nick911sc 02-24-2012 09:35 AM

I think all posting on the forum should be halted until we all collectively force Nissan to recall for this issue. There has to be some way to do it.

I have one question for future reference, how exactly do you remove those two bolts that hold the unit in with the angled pliers? Do you stick the tips of the pliers into the head of the nut? Or do you pinch the head with them and try to break it loose?

No! I have Interior stuff (door cards, dash trim, plexi divider) in my garage that I have to install but I have little free time! I plan on using next month to get back into it!! Either that or sell it! We will see.

Sell it? You must want to be ready for the next go around? As far as the GA guys I feel Frank and I are the only ones holding on.

You guys started with the 370 a bit later is all. I want a sub 4 sec 0-60 car from the factory before mods. ;)

I know what your saying but I wouldn't own another domestic car again.
If someone gave me one, they could be my enemy and I would be forced to sell it.:bowrofl:

True, I've only owned imports minus one past vehicle. The improvements they are making has me thinking. I also want to start buying American more!
(sorry for the highjack!! B.O.T.)

Got it. Thanks!

Vbp6US 02-26-2012 03:21 PM

So has anyone actually done anything significant in regards to getting this issue exposed? Maybe it's not happening to "all" 2009s and early 2010s. Just a thought.

Dwight Frye 02-26-2012 05:43 PM

Well has anyone tried this approach: Go into the dealer and tell them that the car has failed to start a couple of times. Tell the service writer you didn't hear the telltale "bzzt" that the lock mechanism usually makes. The them that you have wiggled the steering wheel and column up and down a couple of times and that seemed to jog it loose and the care then started. Then tell them that there are many, many reports of the locks failing and that you want them to replace the lock asap. This is assuming that you are still under warranty. They would not be able to duplicate the problem but if you raised hell, I'll bet they would replace it. If enough of us do that, Nissan might issue a TSB.
What do you guys think of that strategy ? I'm sure going to be pissed if mine fails. It's an 09 with about 23K miles.

happytheman 02-26-2012 05:49 PM

I'm in the same boat as you are Dwight. '09 w/ ~23k miles, but I would not be able to bring myself to take that tact with my dealership. I am, however, going to ask that they keep one in stock if possible to minimize my downtime. :)

I think that's going to be very hit or miss, but might be worth a shot. The problem is, I'm pretty sure before providing any sort of warranty service, they need to actually reproduce the problem. Or at least, they are supposed to (they will probably lie and say they did, or get special approval from corporate).

I Got One!!

I know a lot of you will think this foolish, but I couldn't stand the thought of being stranded out in the middle of nowhere.:ugh2:
So I bit the bullet and asked our local NAPA dealer to see if he could find me a Rev D. He called Reno Nissan and now, 3 days later I have a new lock! It wasn't cheap, but I think good insurance as I have lenghty spring travel plans.

Z is a 2009, with a Rev B and 12,000 miles on her. No lock issues... YET !! Warrantee expires in Aug. I plan on waiting to see if there is a recall, but will carry the new lock and tools to make the switch on the road if necessary. I'm 75 miles from a dealer and don't want to see her on a flat bed hauler or sitting out in a lot for 3 weeks til the part shows up.

Just to let people know, they can be had !!

I don't think you're foolish at all. If I had the extra dough to do it I would do the same. But I can't justify it at the moment... I'm sure you sleep much better than me at night knowing you don't have to worry now...
