Need advise on tint.....
I got my tints done last Saturday.
I noticed the corner of both sides started to creep up due to the constant opening and closing of the window when you open the doors. I stupidly brabed a razor, and cut off the edge, thinking if I don't it will keep getting worse and worse. The window is fine now. From the outside you can't tell that the corner is missing. From the inside there is a quarter of an inch visible that is missing tint now. Should I leave it alone, or go get it fixed on Saturday? I already know from my conversation with tthe tint place, that they are going to give me a real hard time becausee I fd with the tint the way I did. So, am i being anal about the qtr inch, or should I just get it redone, even if I get charged. Thanks. I didn't realize how bad my OCD is until this happened to me. |
Don't worry I am the same way although I would think that is an install issue. Mine did not do this. Did they use a heat gun right after install to help with the drying? I would take it back anyway.
|
Yeah man I think I will. If it bothers me this much to post this I will take it back and be done with it.
I don't know if the used a heat gun or not. Im in LA, and it was a hot day. LOL I remeber laying in bed the day it happened and thinking about it. Thats when i realized man I have OCD. |

Thats exactley what happened to me.
Thanks for the advise. I will go Saturday, and tell them about the oval shape. |
Happened to me too. Adds character. ;)
|
This is good to know. I'm sure the auto down/up of the window when opening the door only makes things worse. I'll make sure to talk about this with my installer specifically.

Same here!!!
370Z Touring Sport...
Same thing happened to me. The dealer tinted the car before I bought it. When I took it home, I saw the same peeling in the same driver and passenger side corners. My car is currently at the dealer to have the tint redone. If it peels again, I will have them remove the tint all together. I can do without it. |
Yeah man I was thinking the same if this is going to be a problem for me again I will just remove and do with out.
But in LA summer can be unbearable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
My installer made the bottom slightly longer at the bottom and used a flat spatula looking thing to tuck it in. The seam is not disturbed when the window cracks.
|
This might be a stupid question but do they apply the tint on inside or outside? The reason i'm asking after seeing the pics is, i stopped and talked to a installer out on site and he was installing on the outside. Said he would do the whole z for $175.00.
|
Inside. They precut on the outside and then transfer. Look into Hüper Optik ceramic tint, it is expensive but worth it in my opinion. I have it on all my cars and would not think twice about doing it again.
|
The guy that did mine uses some sort of clamp to keep the door button pushed in. The car thinks the door is closed and the windows stay open.

Find a better tint shop imo
Most respectable tint shops will remove the weatherstripping on the bottom of the window to allow them to bring the tint below the weatherstripping line to prevent any peeling like that. This also makes sure there is no visible line on the edge of the tint. I paid 175 for mine (3m lifetime warranty film, 30%/20%) and they used the heat gun for an extra bit of time around the bottom to ensure adhesion. In response to your original post, yes get it done if it is bothering you...you want your Z to be perfect right?? =) |
My guys took it below the gasket so that wouldn't happen. I haven't had any problems so far. I got Suntek Carbon Tint 35% all around. The Carbon won't interfere with the nav and it has a lifetime warranty.
|
there is a hard gasket or plastic thing right there that causes it to peel up. mine did it too and my tint guy kicked himself for not checking it. easy fix.
|
I got it done at Sunshield in Van Nuys, CA. They goofed it up. I have to go back tomorrow. But home boy was already giving me **** on the phone, so I could tell I am in for an intresting morning.
|
All you were doing was attempting to make it work and to prevent it from getting worse. They should not give you any crap over that, they would have to re-tint it anyway. Keep us posted.
|
Hmmm - this is all very interesting - when the tinters do my cars they always remove the entire door card and put film on the whole window glass, not just the top section - so I would never have your problem AK. Is the way yours was done standard practice in the USA? Seems like a lazy option to me.

Sunshield has a good rep, but they are super fast, and deal in volume. I mean 5 guys work on your car, not one. So quality may not always be a priority for them
They will get your car done in 45 min though. They used 3m tint on my car. Well see how it goes, I will keep you guys posted tomorrow after my 8:00am trip to get it fixed. I love how the owner said "Saturday is not our Warrenty day" I laughed and said are you kidding me? He said come at 8:00 am |
