Dome Lights - Question on LED's..

Hey Guys,

Ok, i havent seen this one talked about...

I bought a set of LED lights for the dome and the first set, when I put them in worked, but when they are set to only go on when your doors aren't opened, they still seem to stay on just barely, almost as if "glowing". If you hit the switch to "off", then they go completely black. I bought another set and it does the same. Soo, is this normal? maybe the LED parts glow slightly after for some reason? Just find it weird that when set to off, they go completely black...

I know I will be corrected if I am wrong, but as I recall, the dome/map light is a 3 position switch. On to turn them on and stay on until the switch is turned off or to door positions. The door position allows the light to come on when the door is opened and stays on for a set period of time dims and turns off. The off position is so that you can open the door and not have the lights turn on.
It sounds to me that the light and switch is operating normally.

I'm guessing the socket style hids do that normally, because mine faintly in the dark do the same thing.

I don't think there is any reason to really worry about it since there is almost no draw on the battery.

Yes, sounds like you know what I am talking about. You can see them very faintly in the dark. And that is my only issue, that they would be draining battery over time...

no, your not understanding exactly what its doing... has nothing to do with the switch position. the fact is that the LED when on the door position glows very slightly even when it should be off...

There are 2 ways the lights can plug in, and I had to undo and reattach one of them but other than that they are perfect. I got mine from Diode dynamics. killer price, service, and shipment time. They are also much brighter than most I see in other Z's with different/non stock LED's. They are a 12 LED board and are amazing. check them out

Most people with other aftermarket LED's ask where I got these because of how bright they are. This is not a good example photo of how bada$$ these things look in person but trust me, they're amazing!

Thanks for the post and pic. Can you tell me how the fitment was for this? Did you have to do anything to the lights or do they fit fine?

We haven't had any complaints about this issue with our leds. I had them tested before offering them and we've sold quite a few in the last month.

The good thing is they don't use much power at all so no worries about killing the battery if they stay lit a bit.

DIGItonium 02-15-2012 12:07 PM

Blue/White LEDs are very sensitive. Even in the off position, there's still a tiny bit of current flowing through the socket (probably a solid state switch from the BCM). Regular bulbs have higher resistance, so it won't light up at all.

Try rigging up a blue/white LED. Fully connect one lead, and use your fingers to "connect" the leads on the other. It'll glow dimly.

It shouldn't drain the battery.
