My suspicion is that it adds just a hint of light to the instrument fascia/controls and the shifter to help define them when it’s dark.

Nothing new... I first saw them used in luxury cars. Bimmers started using white LEDs instead of amber.

It is not bright at all to shine on anything.

Haha it provides ambiance at night without too much light saturating the controls.

Those lights is for the passenger to read a map or something. So they don't have to turn on the bright and bother the driver. If you put a newspaper under it. You can see it really clear. ;-)

My 06 Accord had the same thing. Supposed to illuminate buttons, shifter, etc. Seems like no light at all but go somewhere at night without street lights and cover it up with your finger. It helps more than you think.

+1. It makes a difference when it's very dark out and you're the only car on the road.

You can. I briefly looked at it, and it appears to be a thru-hole 3mm LED. I recommend a milky white (diffused) type LED instead of water clear to avoid the spotlight effect.

You'll need to pry and pop off the map light assembly.

I'll try working on this mod sometime after getting the door switch LEDs swapped out, but I'm still really tired from spending the entire weekend working on the audio install.

i give major kudos to nissan for putting this up there, no one would notice if it wasn't there but it is and adds an awesome orange reflection off the silver shifter area... honestly what else could it be for?
