Jack Stands / Floor Jack

Hey - I just got a Nismo and was wondering what type of floor jack I should get and jack stands? I am assuming a 2-ton jack stand / jack would be sufficient? Just for oil changes and small jobs.

Thanks :tiphat:

Saw a few of them at sears - Looking to spend less than $50 if possible.

Spend a couple of bucks more and get a low profile aluminum jack. You might have problems getting one of those cheap sears ones under the car.

Aluminum Floor Jack - 1.5 Ton Aluminum Racing Jack

Aluminum Jack Stands - 3 Ton

:iagree: The racing jacks are light too. Word of warning, these jacks can lift the car quickly and they will also release quickly, so just be careful when you're twisting the handle to lower.

Sound advice there Chris, And Dj

Thanks guys - I am going to look for a better jack - the sears low profile (altho cheap) got horrible reviews.

Anyone have the 1.5 ton jack? Any issues with it fitting under our lowered Z?

phohman 12-14-2011 02:02 PM

I use a high end low-profile jack, but i still have to drive up on a squared 2x12 so that the car is high enough to role the jack under without rubbing. I lift in the middle of the front, just under the engine area. Works great!

It looks like the one that I have only mine has LED's. It works for me, but I'm only lowered about an inch, if you are lowered aggressively then look for a low-profile jack.

ronaldr911 12-14-2011 03:21 PM

Sears also has this low profile jack -

Bad reviews tho -

I was looking for something that I can use to jack up a Nismo and get some jack stands under it so I can change the oil and do regular maintenance - nothing fancy.

yah, sears hydraulics were good back like 15yrs ago but not the recent ones.

just get the american general one from harbor freight. ive got 2 units that ive been using for the last 4-5yrs. no issue.

I have it... I'm at stock height but there is plenty of room to spare. I also took a hockey puck and dremelled the center so that I don't damage the pinch welds..

My only criticism is it doesn't seem to lift very fast unless you do a full pump motion (that's what she said)... most of the lift is at the way bottom of the pump if you follow what I'm saying.

Have you tried lifting from the middle-front lift point to get both front wheels off the ground at the same time? Or only corner by corner?

I feel like there would be clearance issues - especially with the front lip spoiler that comes with the sport. Unless, of course, you drive up on some 2x4s...

Great jack, fits under lowered cars too.

There is no way I can get it far enough in without hitting something... I suppose if you ran it up on some 4x4s then maybe but I haven't tried that. I'd be hard pressed to find a jack long enough to be able to do that with a low profile but it might exist.

Damn that's what I thought... would have made life a little easier.

Hopefully I can reach it through the wheel well.

ronaldr911 12-15-2011 07:43 AM

I have a Nismo - so may need to get up some 2x4's for the body kit. Thanks - I'll get the harbor freight jack and see if that works.

Yes, you'll need a little boost to reach the center jack point. A 2x4 should be enough.

Low Profile Floor Jack - 2 Ton, Rapid Pump® Jack

http://www.the370z.com/members/cbric...jack-front.jpg

I have this jack and it's fantastic. Really low profile and long reach make it much better than most for our cars. It also has a really good lift height, more than any of my jack stands will ever need. It's a great price for what it does mainly because it's NOT aluminum. So it's heavy, but besides that it is fantastic.

ronaldr911 12-23-2011 07:58 PM

^Nice - What is the best spot to place the jack on without damaging anything? Hockey pucks needed?

Any thoughts about this one --> http://www.walmart.com/ip/Torin-Jack...-Jack/14560043

also, will a 1.5 jack work? I was thinking about getting a 2-ton but the 1.5 is cheaper?

I think a 1.5 is probably fine as you will never be lifting the whole car with it. There is a thread somewhere around here showing the lifting points. Or you could just download the service manual. For the front lift point a small block of wood is best IMO.

anthoney it looks like u used ur small jack to raise the side then fit the low profile jack underneath to reach the center jack point if i am not mistaken? is ur car lowered?

anyone using race ramps?
interested in the RLL-87-2 from reverse logic

however only raises to 10 inches. do u think this is enough height to get in for oil changes, change out the sway bars, etc? access to the catalitic converter? how about reversing it onto the ramp so i can install my own catback?

also i guess i could use it to raise the car up a bit to reach front jack point, then jack it and place jack stands.

so another question lol (hey just trying to save money on installations here and have some fun, but SAFETY IS

EastBayZ 01-05-2012 03:43 PM

WOOPS

my main conern is safety.

so also, once i get the front jack uped and onto jackstands, how then do i jack the back (using rear differential) without having the car slip off the front jack stands (or is it pretty stable?) come on this aint that hard.

thanks! help a brother out

Not my car, but that looks like what he did.
Ramps are perfect for oil changes and I will be using ramps for CBE install.
For rear diff and tranny oil changes, I would recommend a lift or 4 jack stands.
Safety is super important to me as well - just be sure to have your car on a completely level ground and use wheel chocks.

kenchan 01-05-2012 04:15 PM

how do you wheel chock a car on 4 jack stands? ;)

EastBayZ 01-06-2012 09:29 PM

Bump

EastBayZ 01-06-2012 09:32 PM

So this might sound gay but this is the procedure:

First use ramp so can get jack to jack point, chok the rear, then
Jack up the front, place the 2 jack stands, the remove jack,
And jack up rear differential, place the next to jack stands
An wala? Right? Will the front stay steady on the 2 jacks when u jack up the back?

ronaldr911 01-06-2012 10:19 PM

No Idea - I'm a newbie w/ a Nismo. I figured I dont want to spend more in jacks than I would be saving by doing the work myself (plus the added comfort). So I was going to use the factory jack and jack stands... and then also considered getting a racing jack if needed to lift the car like done in the picture.

roy'sz 01-07-2012 02:09 PM

My 2 cents worth. I got a low profile racing jack from harbor frieght for 50 bucks and works great. I can short pump it and it lifts pretty good. I have to crafsman car stands that work good. Piece of advice for lifting, in the front of the car behind the tire you will notice that there are two little hooks under the car, right behind it is where you want to life from and when you upt the stands under there put it at the choke point right behind the hook/ear. Its welded and that is pretty much a solid point.

CBRich 01-10-2012 01:50 PM

I think someone asked about my car being lowered. It is. On H&R. If it weren't I think you could go without the first small jack.
