Yes I didn't know they made them out of any other material and I found mine in eBay for about $45 shipped to me. I thought it was a good deal.

No crap. It should come with a tow truck attached to the other end for that!

No offense to anyone, but what's the deal with tow hooks? They seem to be the new JDM thing to do these days and I missed the memo, big time. Are they functional? Or is it just an aesthetic thing?

Depending on how they're made, probably less functional than factory one. They're aesthetic and I wouldn't be surprised if people want to add bike racks to their Z's. Also, maybe add all those collage of stickers on their aftermarket lips or hanging a stuffed animal/toy on the rear, shocker sticker, bunch of "I'm so JDM" stickers...

Would it be considered a JDM thing if someone screwed the OEM hook in and drove around?

I think you can call it is more of a style thing, sure, but calling it JDM is just stupid. It has nothing to do with Japan or the parts they sell in Japan.

Is a tow hook functional? Have you tried to pull or tow your car from any other area? How well did that work?

You know if you get in a minor fender-bender, any installed tow-hook could end up stabbing the other car and causing more damage than necc. Just food for thought. At least the aftermarket flip-down ones aren't as bad about that as the stock one, but it could still happen. I leave mine off most of the time and just screw it in for the track.

Unless you're low and you run into something taller than you... like a truck... then it's game over no matter what.
